Abaddon, NM

First Post
Because of our extended break from "A Kingdom of Ashes", an opening has come up for me to run a one shot game. the idea right now is run a d20 modern horror game in the small town of Abaddon, New Mexico. you'd be playing normal people in a not so normal situation. i think it'd be a nice change of pace from the high action, high adventure epic that is "A kingdom of Ashes". Also, since this will essentially be a one night game i don't see what else i could run that we could finish in one night.
This is the game i'm planning for now but if you guys want me to run something else let me know.
take it easy,

When would you be running this? Not that I'll likely be able to attend anyway. :(

And because I can't help myself...

You know what would make an even better change of pace?

Shadowrun.

Okay, I'm done. Don't hit me :p

when

i'm still not sure on a date. i'm thinking the weekend of the Fifth as of now. but that might change if no one can make it.
i'd like to have at least three players.

Shadowrun would still be high action. Although heroism would tend to be grayer--die hard, rather than lord of the rings. I enjoyed the Shadowrun D20 (sorta) thing we ran.

However, I am BEGGING you to keep this light. I never get to play (yes that is an exaggeration), and I don't want to play a Cthulhu-esque everybody dies or goes insane kind of game. I know you guys are playing high-adventure, high action--but as the DM, I'm not. I'm playing devious villainy and backstabbing, with absolutely no potential for heroism, since even the good NPCs take a backseat to you guys out of necessity.

So, although, I won't write up an ex-delta force sniper with mutant powers, I WILL want to play someone with a little bravado, and a sense of humor about the undying hordes of Hell. So, if I play an insurance salesman (or a highway patrolman, or whatever), I'll want to play him something "Ash-y" from Army of Darkness. Or perhaps Hellboy-ish, but without the horns and the right hand of doom.

If that's going to ruin the game, or decrease the "feel," let me know--but please remember that I haven't gotten to play a character for two consecutive sessions since 1998, and I have been on DM duty for the life of this particular group. I want to play something where I can be a hero, fighting for Good. :)

(I guess another way to put it would be that at this point, I would have more fun playing John Carpenter's Vampires than I would playing Bram Stoker's Dracula. I'd rather play Brad Mignola's Hellboy, than HP Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu).

Shadowrun is actually not at all high action, although I suppose one can play it that way. Why one would is beyond me, however. It's not about heroism and there are no heroes, die hard or otherwise. It's about nuyen and survival. Of course, we never got into that stuff because y'all never really made it into the world fully. The next segment would have been the hard and fast intro.

*sigh*

This moral/heroic stuff is eroding my spirit.

i see. well it's not that big of deal. i can run something else. just give me some ideas. i'll just save "Abaddon, NM" for another time.

I think Abaddon sounds cool, but I wanted to make sure we were on a similar wavelength, at least, before getting started. Horror, as a whole, is not my genre of choice to watch, read, or play...unless it's mixed with something else.

We don't have to play anything as epic as KoA or Star Wars, but crushing fear and despair are generally not themes I want to explore in my escapist fantasies/games. If straight up horror is the only way that we can ever experience "Abaddon," I'm not sure I'll ever be terribly thrilled about it. It can be dark, but I tend to lose interest when things cross the line from "X-files" or "Pitch Black" dark to *Actual* dark.

I like things that are creepy, and scary, and I deeply enjoy the supernatural...but if that's ALL they are, I am generally not interested.

"There are things man was not meant to know...shoot them." That's a good illustration of how I tend to want to play through such things.
