Complete Divine Errata Items I have found

Silveras

First Post
In the "first look at Complete Divine" thread, I mentioned I had found some errata items, and Olive asked if I would share them.

I am still plowing through the spells for my project, but here are the errata items for the A-D spells, and a couple of other things I noticed.

------------------------------------------
p.142, Druid spells list, Infestation of Maggots
This spell is listed twice on the "New Druid Spells" list, once at 3rd level and again at 4th.

Response:
It is in fact a 3rd-level spell. The other entry was to be removed. Good Gaming!

------------------------------------------
p. 105, Staff of Incarnation
The staff of incarnation allows use of 3 spells that are not published in the core, this book, or anywhere else that I know of: Lesser Incarnation, Incarnation, and Greater Incarnation.

-------------------------------------------
p.157, Illustration caption
The illustration has the caption "Brambles". The description of the Brambles spell has nothing to do with what is depicted. It seems more appropriate to the "Briar Web" spell.

Response:
You are correct. The illustration is mislabeled. Good Gaming!

Question to customer service:
Some of the spells in Complete Divine were revised for 3.5 in the Book of Exalted Deeds (ex. Bolt of Glory, Crown of Glory, on pages 155 and 160). The versions in the Book of Exalted Deeds are substantially different from the versions in Complete Divine. The versions in Complete Divine are re-prints of the original versions from Defenders of the Faith.

Theoretically, the latest published book takes precedence, so Complete Divine supercedes Book of Exalted Deeds. Is that meant to be the case here ? Are the versions in the Book of Exalted Deeds "erroneous updates", or is the cut-and-paste from Defenders of the Faith in error ?

[Edit:
Response: At this point, we have to go with the Complete Divine, as it is the last published source, and no other updates appear to be forthcoming. Good Gaming!

--------------------------------------------
pp. 160-161, Curse of Lycanthropy spell
The spell's description appears to have been copied verbatim from Defenders of the Faith. It refers the reader to "Appendix III of the Monster Manual" for more information on Lycanthropy. The revised Monster Manual has no appendices. Appendix III in the 3.0 Monster Manual referred to Templates. That information is now in the main body of the Monster Manual, in the Lycanthrope entry, on pp.170-178,.

----------------------------------------------
p. 161, Decomposition spell
The spell differentiates between normal and "subdual" damage. The term "subdual damage" should have been replaced with "nonlethal" while updating this spell from Defenders of the Faith.

----------------------------------------------
p. 164, Dragon Breath spell
The spell's Components entry reads "V, S, M/DF", but there is no material component described in the text. Also, the descriptor reads "[Good or Evil]"; other spells with a similarly variable descriptor say "[See text]".

----------------------------------------------
Embrace the Wild is listed as a 3rd level Druid spell. It is not in the book.

E-L spell errata items

p. 165, Fires of Purity spell

The spell's header is missing the Range entry. Based on the Target entry, and the spell's text, it should probably say "Range: Touch".

-----------------------------------
p. 166, Flame of Faith spell

The spell's target states the weapon used must be nonmagical. The text then says the effects bestowed by this spell do not stack with a weapon's enhancement bonus or flaming or flaming burst effects. A nonmagical weapon cannot have an enhancement bonus or flaming or flaming burst

Also, the spell's description refers to the lump of phosphorous as a "Material Focus". There is no "Material Focus" component type defined. There are "Material Component" components (which are used up in casting the spell), and there are "Focus" components (which are NOT used up in casting the spell).

Both of these errors have been copied unaltered from the original text in Defenders of the Faith.

------------------------------------
p. 167, Infestation of Maggots spell

The text of the spell refers to "cure disease". That spell is now called "remove disease".

------------------------------------
p. 167, Languor spell

As written, this spell becomes weaker as the caster level rises. The subject suffers a penalty of 1d6 -1 per two caster levels, with a minimum additional penalty of 0 and a maximum of -10. A 7th level caster then creates a penalty of 1d6 - 3, or 0, 0, 0, 1, 2, 3 on 1d6. An 8th level caster then generates a penalty of 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, or 2 on 1d6. A 10th level caster generates a penalty of 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, or 1 on 1d6. And a 12th level caster generates no penalty at all.

It is fairly intuitive that the intention is the other way around, that the penalty's magnitude is *increased* by a higher caster level. However, as written, it does not work that way.

This poor expression is directly copied from the original text in Masters of the Wild. While the interaction with haste has been made more clear, this needed attention as well.

Also, the penalty is typed as an "Enhancement penalty.". Penalties in 3.5 are not typed.

--------------------------------------
p.167, Last Breath spell

This spell is a 4th level Druid spell. It is omitted from the 4th level spells in the Druid's list.

M-O spells

p. 168, Maelstrom spell

The spell is assigned to the Ocean domain (as are Tidal Surge and Waterspout). The Ocean domain is omitted from the new Domains listed here.

------------------------------------
p. 170, Naturewatch spell

The "Target:" entry seems wrong. The spell affects an area, not targets, so it should be an "Area:" entry.

Also, the description of the area affected should be re-worded to "Cone-shaped area emanating from you" to match the 3.5 usage (the Deathwatch spell, on which this is based, and the various Detect XXX spells that used the same area description all use the "Cone-shaped area" text in 3.5).

A couple more... in the Ps

The P section of the spells is rather long, so this may not be all.

p. 173, Phantom Bear spell

The bear's HD and hit points appear to be wrong. The stat block lists them as "HD 14d10+48; hp 113".

The +48 bonus and 113 total appear to have been carried over from the stat block for the phantom wolf (12d10+48 = 114, not 113, by the way). The bear has a 20 Con, for a +5 bonus per die, and 14 HD, so the +48 should be +70. The hit points should be 77 (14*5.5) + 70 = 147.

-------------------------------
p. 174, Phantom Wolf spell

The attack bonus for the single attack and the full attack do not agree (+21 vs. +22). The single attack is always one of those in a full attack series, usually the best. Since they are both for the bite attack, one of the two is incorrect.

By my calculations, the +21 is correct and the +22 incorrect (Base +12, 29 Dex = +9, -1 Size, +1 Weapon Focus = +21).

I may be remembering incorrectly, but isn't the penalty (1d6-1) per 2 levels? So 1d6-1, 2d6-2, 3d6-3, 4d6-4, and 5d6-5?

Bill

I don't have the specifics of which PrC memorized, but I noticed there were several instances where a page was referenced and it only read (page XX). That happened on at least 3 occasions that I can remember. I think in the shugenja when referencing his spell list is one I can remember.

I believe these were changed to the 'Visage of the Diety' chain of spells. Not positive.

That's possible, but they were called "Aspect of the Deity" in Defenders of the Faith and Book of Exalted Deeds. I understand the change from Aspect -> Visage, as that helps eliminate confusion with monsters that are "Aspects" of a deity (monster type from the Miniatures Handbook).

Unfortunately, since we don't know whether that is truly the answer, it must go to errata to be addressed.

Possibly, but since they did not use parentheses and did not actually provide an example, the most likely interpretation is the one I presented. That's how other spells with a "1dx +/- y per" works.

Maybe I am just too quick to presume that most people will read it like Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 per caster level = 1d8+1, 1d8+2, 1d8+3, 1d8+4 and not 1d8+1, 2d8+2, 3d8+3, etc.

I must admit that most other spells say "1dx points + y point(s) per", but they address hit points cured/damaged, and not a penalty.

Reading the Languor spell after reading all the other spells that work like Cure Light Wounds, I would expect people to come to the conclusion I submitted in the errata item. If the intention actually was for the penalty to be "3d6-3" at 7th level (minimum to cast this spell), they really should have provided an example of that to set it off from the other spells.
