Eberron - Cool or Drool?

So, at Piratecat's suggestion, here is the thread for anyone (like myself) that is completely, and totally apathetic towards the Eberron setting.

I suspect that everyone is probably going to withhold judgement regarding this setting until we actually see it. But, so far, I can think of very few published settings that would make me want to abandon my own homebrew. I could be wrong - Eberron might come out, and I might pick it up at my FLGS, and see something in it that totally blows me away.

But, I doubt it.

Anyone else feel this way?

From what I've seen so far its just Eber-yawn to me. While I appreciate all of the creativity and hardwork poured in to the game world, it's just not happenin' for me. No spark. No "I must buy this" vibe.

I feel the same way. So far it doesn't look that bad, but I am certainly not going to be busting down the doors to my FLGS to buy it. I doubt I will buy it at all...just doesnt' look like my cup of tea.

Well, I'm unlikely to actually use the EBERRON setting, but I'm planning on buying the book and plundering its crunch for my own campaign.

(On a related note, I now have a great name for a d20 Breakfast Cereal: Plunder Crunch.)

I will be picking it up, just to see about it. I'm not excited per se, nor do I think that it will displace any of my current campaign plans (nor backup plans), but I will take a look and see how they did.

And plunder, if necessary. ;)

Well, I certainly don't expect it to "make me want to abandon my own homebrew" but I am looking forward to picking it up and reading through it. I have lots of campaign settings, and even RPGs for that matter, that I've never run and probably never will, but I still enjoy reading them and occasionally being inspired to steal or borrow something.

Personally I'm more excited to see the Iron Kingdoms Character Guide come out....but despite the amount of flak Eberron has drawn, I've got the unique tactic of keeping an open mind until I actually read the book, then deciding if I want to buy it :)

My biggest problem...

My biggest problem with Eberron is that it seems like standard D&D with the volume nob turned up a bit (if you read about Monte Cook's Ptolus campaign, you've heard this before).

There's not a distinctive theme. So there's a high amount of magic... well, that's D&D, isn't it? The reason settings like Ravenloft and Darksun are interesting is because the basic D&D rules are transplanted into a completely different and, in a sense, more restrictive world. One where some of the rules actually have to be limited or, in some cases, won't even work.

In Eberron, all the rules apply. So, what's changed?

Other than grousing about the latest indignities heaped upon The Forgotten Realms with every new release (but still rushing out and buying it anyway because it is still decent work), the only other thing that seems to really interest me is Castles & Crusades and the Castle Zagyg setting.

I think you nailed it for me.

It's like D&D on steroids. BAM! IT'S D&D!

It's like a bad commercial geared towards Gen Y folks with some guy screaming into the camera. "EBERRON! YOU'RE GONNA LOVE IT!"
