[HARP/d20] New Lamps for Old!

To date, the various companies publishing d20 products have published over 1600 individual products! This information comes from EN World's own publisher listings, so even though it is is fantastic, I am sure there are a few missing (new releases, an item forgotten or missed here or there, etc...).

What has that to do with ICE and HARP you ask?

Simple! Out of that huge number of products, there is a good chance that many of them are.... shall we say?... less than good.

You bought them. You found that you hated them, or found that they were entirely wrong for the types of campaign that you are wanting to run. What are your choices? You can either stick them on your shelves where they will take up space and be belittled by your better books, or you can try to sell them. Unfortunately, by the time you go to sell them, there are a number of other copies for sale as well, so your chances of selling them look slim.

Well, now you have another option!!!

ICE has a new promotion underway! You send us $30 worth of unwanted d20 products. It does not matter who published it so long as it has the d20 logo and it is in decent condition (i.e. no missing pages) and you get $15 off your purchase of the HARP roleplaying game! That is a 60% discount in trade for a few unwanted books!

To take advantage of this deal, you just place your order online at ICE's website - http://www.ironcrown.com - and then send in the books. As soon as ICE receives the books, you will receive the $15 discount, charged back to your card! Quite simple!

Therefore, if you are wanting to try an exciting new game! One with lots of flexibility and choices for you as a player! Then HARP is the game for you!!

Hmm. Interesting offer.
That is what we are hoping that people will think!

Also, ICE has recently placed HARP for sale as a non-DRM encumbered PDF for only $10!

So you now have several methods by which to check out HARP to see if it might appeal to you. (there are also numerous free PDFs on the HARP website - http://www.harphq.com that you can check out as well).

Hmmmm...

Well, the publisher in me saw the thread title and the first paragraph, and started hoping ICE was looking to do some third party licensing to build up a range of supporting products quickly...

But my next question is... before I go buy that $10 PDF, what are ICE's PDF plans for other products in the HARP line?

If you are interested in licensing HARP, email me privately. We are already in talks with a couple of different folks about it now. Those who license early get better licensing deals. ;)

Well, College of Magics, the next HARP product to be released (in a couple of weeks, once it is back from the printers), will be released as a PDF later today, and just like HARP will be without DRM. I seriously doubt that ANY pdf that we release will ever have DRM on it. I won't say never because maybe they will come up with a non-intrusive form of DRM that actually works (and maybe I will get struck by lightning 3 times in the exact same spot as well :) ).

ICE is, however, planning on implementing a method of watermarking PDFs with customer information at some point, but we are not letting the fact that we do not have that ready yet deter us from releasing PDFs in the meantime.

Just as a side note, we are working on PDFing several Rolemaster books as well.

Just out of curiosity, why? Is it your intention to sue the people whose watermark is on a P2P network?

Only as a last resort. As a company we want to protect our copyrights, however we also do not want to impinge upon your rights as a consumer with the copy you purchase from us.

DRM is useless, and is a nuisance to folks who purchase pdfs. Watermarking would be just as easy to remove most likely, however its purpose is to deter not those who are determined pirates, but those who are casual pirates. A casual piriate is one shares something because it is fun to do so, and may or may not realize that they have done wrong. The first step if a watermarked file is found would be to contact the person whose name is on it and find out how it got there. Then we would take steps to get it removed. However, we do realize that the person whose name is on it may not be the one who put it up. He may have shared it with his local game group and one of them may have done it.

While we would personally prefer that everybody purchased their own copy of the pdfs, we do expect that some folks will share them with their local gaming group. It is mass distribution and file-sharing that are the problem that have to be dealt with.

Yair, we are not the RIAA. We are not out to sue little kids or take the life savings of college students. We just want to protect our copyrights, and we want to be able to do it in as unintrusive manner as possible.

Please note that while we do want to protect our copyrights and are planning to watermark products in the future, that even though we do not have this ready yet, we are still selling PDFs.
