Most expensive ebook ever!

So I've been wanting to check out Exalted for a while now, and all this hubbub about DriveThruRPG prompted me to check out their site. Exalted was available for free - score! However, it looks like my Windows 98 machine is too ancient to run Acrobat 6. So I'd have to upgrade to Windows XP. Which is like $150. And while I'm doing that I should probably replace my hard drive, since it's small and has been giving me weird errors. So that's around $120. And backing up everything and reformatting and installing a new hard drive and putting Windows XP on there will probably take 1 to 2 hours.

So, the electronic version of Exalted would end up costing me almost $300 and about an hour and a half.

Most expensive ebook ever!

Be fair you don't really have to buy the hard disk....

Still you might have say had to completely replace your Win 98 laptop, which wasn't internet ready or able to run XP. So you could have had to spend over $1000 so $150 dollars is a bargin! :]

Good point! In fact, I could have been living in a cardboard box, so I would have had to buy a computer, rent an apartment with electricity, and get a modem or phone line.

I run Adobe 6 on Windows 98.

well, for your next trick tell us how you managed to install it on Windows 98.

My old 98 box is my web development box. I've tried upgrading it to various other windows OSes that include some version of IIS, but the damned things always fail at some point in the process.

I run acrobat reader 6 from my 98 machine. I used the copy I got from RPGNOW when I ordered a CD of rpg stuff from them.

Realizing that this thread as a packaged is mislabeled:

Loony (apt name), I had a worm in WinXP within hours of installing it. It is very vulnerable to some common worms in its newly installed state. And after the worm was in, grabbing the updates over dialup was impossible.

So you really need to pick up an antivirus suite immediately, so add another $30 or so.

But to put this on the practical plane here, this problem is my #2 reason (after no guarantee of lifetime) I am adverse to buying DRM PDFs. My gaming laptop is a 500 MHz machine with win98. It is not WORTH upgrading. Who knows how long it will be before I will be getting a new one. Upgrading the OS is not practical, and would only promise me hourse of configuration and recopying work that I could be spending writing reviews or doing game work. (I made the mistake of not backing up some stuff on my desktop when I went to XP and lost some stuff permanently because I made the stupid assumption that XP was going to transfer the data over. :( )
