If you join a group with 4 players alread, and they are fighter, Rogue, wizard and Cleric and you get the standar rolls for making an NPC what would you play? In a generic world, all at first lvl.

I don't think that being the fifth member of a party matters what class I would take. Actually the other PCs rarely matter what class I take. I think its better to play what you what and not try to fill in an empty role.

So, I choose Bard, my favorite class in the PHB.

Me, too. For the opposite reasons. :D

I picked fighter because, IMO, at low levels having more than one "tank" that deals damage and death for a living is a good thing. However, ranger and monk come in close on its heals.

Whatever you want. All the bases are covered, so don't worry and play what you want; your choice isn't going to impact the party's strenght in a dramatic fashion.

What the party needs most of all is another meat shield. Fighter, Barbarian, Monk, Paladin, or Cleric with a suitable domain (eg. War). It would depend on my rolls. With good stat rolls I'd probably go for a paladin or monk. With stats that needed dumping I'd go for a cleric or fighter. I guess that the paladin or cleric would be the better choice in each case, as backing up with a little extra healing and turning.

I'd try to figure out if there was a way my PC could be back-story connected to the current PCs or a strong representative of the current location the PCs are in--major "local boy" with coinciding interests to the PCs. One time I played a character who had severe hero worship of the PCs, which drove them nuts (and amused the players).
