What issue were these creatures in?

Rooooooo

First Post
Back when Dragon had a Bestiary section in each issue they published one with some really cool dragon-like monsters. They were Medium to Large sized dragon/lizard looking things. I think only one of them could fly. They each had glands in their mouth or neck that created a unique substance that could be used a bit like a breath weapon. One secreted a highly acidic substance, another a gluey substance, and I think one even made something like beer.

I wanted to use these creatures immediately, but couldn't work them in. Now I'm ready to use them, but I can't remember what issue they are in. :] I've dug through all of my issues, but can't find them! Does anyone remember these creatures? What issue were they in? Help please!!

Found it!

Thanks for the tip, Necrohazard!

I just found them in Dragon 284 - page 92: Return of the Greater Drakes by Johnhathan M Richards.

Indeed I do. Incidentally, there are even more of these greater drakes in the original article in Dragon #260, although they'll require conversion from the AD&D 2nd Edition rules, under which they were written.

The five 3E greater drakes from #284 actually make an appearance (of sorts) in The Draconomicon: they're listed by name in the appendix of all "official" WotC draconic creatures as of the time of printing. I was understandable pleased beyond all belief to see them there.

Super-groovy!

I'll be sure to grab that back-issue soon. It will be fun converting the old Greater Drakes to the 3E rules! :)

The article in issue #284 is great! I'm re-reading it, and again I'm thoroughly impressed with the amount of creativity, thought and research that obviously went into it. Material like this is truly inspiring for me as a player and a DM.

Johnathan:

I'm sure the Greater Drakes aren't the only creations of yours to grace the pages of Dragon - or other publications for that matter. I see where you wrote a couple Slayers' guides for Mongoose, but I was unable to find anything else. I'll be sure to check those out as well. What else should I be on the look out for? Is there a web-page that lists your accomplishments?

I just did a search thru my copy of the Dragon Archive CDs and came up with at least 20 articles (mostly ecology articles) that he did. I will post a list, including issue, later.

These are what I found:

Ecology of the Owlbear #214
Putting Evil to Good Use #215
Ecology of the Osquip #227
Ecology of the Roper #232
Bazaar of the Bizarre:Lich Magic Items #234
Ecology of the Nymph #240
Ecology of the Mongrelmen #242
Dragon's Bestiary: Magical Crossbreeds #243
Ecology of the Sphinx #244
Ecology of the Steeder #245
Ecology of the Flumph #246
Dragon's Bestiary: Frogs and Toads #247

Richards has also written a bunch of adventures for Dungeon, including the "Challenge of Champions" articles that consist of level-independent puzzles and problem-solving. Good stuff.

Someone beat me to it. These CDs are still great (even at 1st and 2nd edition rules)
