Checking in here. I have no idea what I'd play as of yet. I'd have to see the mechanics, but I'm willing to fill in whatever role is needed (it's a playtest, after all).

Jarval - thanks for the starting gold.

I'm just in the process of doodling up a description of the city/region in which you will start. For some reason, early 20thC Wales seems to be the image I have in mind. I thought I would share to give you an insight where I am, but don't get too hung up on it. I don't really know anything about Wales. Just a couple of worn out cliches really. Perfect.

The central patron in the game will be a priest (NPC). Each of your characters will have ties to him (or his church), and through that, your character will have become aquainted with the others to some degree. With some your character may have become friends. But there is no requirement that you like each other. But nothing so strong as to make your characters unwilling to work with another.

The priest should have some reason to have some small faith in your abilities and character. However, keep in mind that you are 1st level, and have will not have had enough time/experience to build a solid reputation as yet. Trusted perhaps. But largely untried.

HOUSE RULE OPTIONS

-- Profession --

Ranks in profession acts as a safety net to skill checks in the field. So if you have 4 ranks - you can replace any related skill check roll of less than 4 with a 4.

IC THREAD CONVENTIONS

Italics for thoughts
"Talking marks for anything said aloud."
ooc: size=1 for any ooc comments, relevent maths and mechanics, etc.

No colored text please.

ENDNOTE

I am sure that there was something else. Can't remember what it was though.

The Provis of Hearn

THE PROVIS OF HEARN

The Provis of Hearn is a subject state of its much larger neighbour, the Empire of Banhied. Most of the center of the principality is covered by hills and mountains. The western coast is rugged and affords few harbours of any note. The southern coast, however, offers both harbours and plains.

For centuries, the Orcii ruled the much of lands that now form the principality. To the east stood the two great forests of Wyre and Dain, enclosed within the great arm of the River Severn. Elves ruled the hearts of these great forests, although halflings could also be found within their shadows. What little human habitation there was, was clustered on the plains around the few good harbours on the southern coast. But there was little sense of unity amoung them, and no sense of belonging to a single state. They were city-states more than anything else.

The relationship between the city-states and the orcii was generally one of mutual distrust. But it was quickly put aside to repel any attemps by the Empire of Banhied to establish a foothold there. So with the eastern boarder protected by the great Severn and dark forests and the few deepwater southern ports protected by fortifed cities, this stayed the same for centuries.

But about 250 years ago, massive iron and other mineral ore deposits were discovered in the hills the around the southern coast. Thousands flocked to the cities of the south and began expeditions began pushing deeper into the lands of the orcii in search of more deposits. Conflicts began to flare up between the orcii and humans. Frustrated by the human lords inability to restrain its people, the orcii united under one bannner and declared war on the cities of the south in order to drive them from their lands for good.

Perhaps they would have if the Provis of Banhied had not stepped in and in return for swearing fealty to the Magocracy, they poured troops and resourses into the beleagued southern cities. Eventually, the tide turned in the Empire's favour and the orcii were in turn driven back deep into their lands. The lands were claimed under one name, and the Provis of Hearn was born.

-- The North --

There are giants in the nothern mountains. Dwarves as well. Its an area rich in mineral wealth, jealously guarded.

GALLOWAY

Gallow was the last region of the Provis to be taken from the Orcii. From the coastal cities, the armies of man pushed the Orcii back through the hills towards the central highland plains. There, between the western mountains and southern highland ranges, the Orcii made their last stand to protect highland plains that had been their homelands since the beginning of time. There they were beaten into submission. After the surviving war-sworn and shaman were hung, and those that were spared had sworn fealty, the remnants of the Orcii were permitted to return to the hills.

GALLOW-ON-TEP

Gallow-on-Tep is, as its name suggests, named after a gallows found on the river Tep. In particular, the gallows where the Orcii leader Nordhhaj, his war-sworn and the shamen were hung after after the Battle of Seven Spears. The valley in which the city sits was the site of the last stand of the Orcii. The army camp became a town, and then a city. The city's name eventually gave rise to the name of the region, and later the provence. Galloway.

Gallow-on-Tep, despite being the largest city in the provence, is not its capital. Gallow, as it is generally known, is located at the center of a web of small towns built to exploit the resources of the region - timber, minerals, furs and to a lesser degree, ceramics. The mineral rich soil produces some quite interesting clays.

The One True Church

THE CHURCH

-- The Factions --

The three factions are more like factions in a political party than the separate churches of historical christianity. All the church buildings belong to The Church. In some areas, the factions live side by side without there being any overt distinction between them. In others, a cold war rages between them.

Village Wards tend to reflect the philosophy of the people more than that of the Cleric. More than one brash new cleric has, after attempting to impose his position on a Ward, found himself frozen out of the local community, or even physically thrown out in some cases.

In the larger towns and cities, there are usually several Wards, and a greater degree of factionalism is evident as people gravitate to the church that best reflects their views on what is right.

-- Gallow-on-Tep --

The Patriach of Gallow-on-Tep is the senior cleric of the city and the surrounding Protectorate. The protectorate of Gallow consists of quite a few Wards, a some in the city proper and quite a number in the surrounding region. Gallow has traditionally been free of overt interfactional conflict, but recently tensions and conflicts between the factions within Gallow and the Protectorate have been increasing. There have been occasional incidents of violence that some attribute inter-faction disputes. The church denies that this is so.

The riots three years ago were the result of a tangled knot of long simmering grievences and tensions. Although they are not directly tied to interfactional conflict, the polarised positions of the factions and rather strident sermons and preachings of some of the clerics have been blamed for inflaming the situation. It is a charge that the Patriach has acknowledged and since then, factional disputes have been much more low key and largely played out behind the scenes.

-- Father Kirkham --

Father Kirkham came to Gallow-on-Tep about 10 years ago. Some said he had been banished from the Banhied for scandal or another. He himself has never really said anything on the subject other than it he serves the will of the God through the Church.

Father Kirkham is a relatively unimposing man to look at, but a powerful presence to be in the room with. He is of the High faction, but rarely brings it up. Unless you asked him directly, you would probably have only found out about it in a round about way.

When he arrived, Father Kirkham was assigned to one of the smaller churches in the city. In the intervening years, it has become one of the best attended. Many say that the Father's success and popularity have earned him the emnity of the Patriach. But Father Kirkham won't be drawn in it, even if you asked him directly. For while he is a direct man by nature, he is also a diplomatic one. Some believe that his refusal to be drawn into the church power politics is a well considered political play, but many others believe him when he says that his only interest is in serving the people.

The loyalty and respect that Father Kirkham had commanded was instrumental in protecting his Ward from the worst of the riots. From the pulpit, he preached restraint and reason, and reminded his ward that hot heads and inflamed passions was no justification for straying in the eyes of God. During the riots, Father Kirkham's church suffered much less damage than most. Since the riots his Ward has grown in number quite significantly. The small group of people that formed the nucleus of the 'Guardians', those that stood, initially at the doors of the church, and later at key intersections around the ward, and turned away the rioter's with (mostly) just calm words and steady gazes, remain bound together by ties stronger than their personal feeling for each other.

Could everyone fill out one of these and post it up. I'm not really sure how this will all fit in exactly. I'll have a better idea after I see what you write.

A quick outline will be fine for the last three.
