D&D 4e is pure win and I'll tell you why...

Because strangely enough, some of the things that people have been complaining about are actually working in my favor. To be more specific, I've seen complaints that D&D is more like a boardgame and D&D is like WoW.

Enter the significant other. I tried to get her interested in 3.5, but failed miserably. However, she does like board games, and she does like WoW. I'm sure you see where this is going. The point is, now I get to share a hobby I enjoy with someone I care about.

Btw, she hates anime. So I can say with certainty that D&D 4e is not too anime. ;)

Nothing like a sample of one to statistically prove a point! :p

I'm jealous, though. Can't get my significant other involved in D&D 3.x ecause she complained it was too complicated, and when I first saw 4E, I actually did think, "hey, maybe there's a shot here!" Course, I share my views and rants with her, so she's heard me complain 4E is "dumbed down" and...yeah. She knows how I feel about the edition, so if I tried to present it to her now, I imply the message, "hey honey, I found a version of D&D simplistic enough for you to like!" and I'll be without the one thing I enjoy more than D&D. :)

....................

And please, I was summarizing events that happened, not trying to bait an edition war.

My GF read through the 4e books, and came to the conclusion the system wasn't for her. She doesn't mind 3e though, prefers a couple of other systems. 4e? Nope.

So, I'm also lucky in this regard, as I happen to dislike it as well. If someone were to run the game, I'd play it, so I'm not rabidly opposed, say. For that matter, the SO probably would too. But I'm not at all concerned that no-one I know will be running it, and no-one I know particularly wants to play it either.

You just need a change of heart and suddenly see the wisdom and elegance of 4E and start praising it on the boards!

Well, I doubt that will happen. Preferences can change, but not on command. ;)

Bah! It'll generalize to the population. I took a statistics class at college, so I'm an expert. :D

Your situation is similar to mine, 3.5 seemed too complicated to her also. However, I kept any complaints I had about 4e to myself. (Where is my monk?!?!)

I wouldn't say I'm rabidly for 4e, but I do appreciate the streamlining changes they've done. If the so called "dumbing down" of D&D makes it more accessible to a larger audience, then I'm for it. Especially if that larger audience includes friends. But of course, the people I play with matter more to me than what I'm actually playing. I'm not completely uncritical, but even something like Chutes and Ladders would be fun with the right people.

I see it this way.

If 4e allows more people to enter into the hobby I am a supporter (if not a player or DM). This way, as folks tastes change and they find that they would like to play some non-D&D genre fantasy ie. anything other than fantasy supers, they can look at other systems that support more styles of gameplay.

Ultimately more folks in the hobby is good for all systems.

You could dress it up differently.

"Hey, honey, it turns out 4e isn't dumbed down. They just took out all the unnecessary cruft. It's actually a decent game (or whatever), wanna try some time?"

Heh, I make it a policy not to lie to her, so that would never work. :)
