I think it working as the blur spell works just fine. it should have a big enough size bonus to hide think. we can always give it a feat to make it stealthier if we wanted.

If we decide to make it stealthier I'd prefer a racial bonus like the Pseudodragon's +4 to Hide over giving it a feat.

Why? It makes the creature's outline less distinct, and breaking up or distorting your outline is a standard camouflage trick.

More pertinently, the blur spell doesn't provide any bonuses to Hide.

Come to think of it, it does give it one stealth benefit - if it counts as concealment it means the Foxdragon can hide "in the open" without needing cover.

If you see the haze from the heat, you know something is there, even if it's not a foxdragon. So the haze gives it a miss chance, but you still know the location (just not precisely enough to hit it). And I'm opposed to treating it as concealment for that reason, also. However, I'm not opposed to a racial Hide bonus.

But that's what the blur spell does. It gives the subject concealment. That's what produces the 20% miss chance.

Isn't the spell what we're basing it on?

I was thinking of adding a reference to the blur spell or concealment in the SQ description to make that explicit, but seem to have forgotten about it when writing the draft.

It's not currently as blur, and I just don't think it should be blur given that it's heat based, that's all. But it doesn't really matter much.

The "heat based" is just flavour at the moment and doesn't include and mechanical consequences, so I'm not worried about it really.

I think we'd better rework the description to mention and concealment and possibly the blur spell.

Upon reflection, we don't really need to mention blur.

e.g.:

Heat Haze (Ex): A foxdragon can heat the air surrounding it to bend and blur light, making it difficult to surmise the creature's true location. This grants the foxdragon concealment (20% miss chance) unless the attacker can locate the beast by some means other than sight. A see invisibility spell does not counteract this effect, but a true seeing allows the user to see the foxdragon's position.

Stealth skills would seem to make sense.

Speaking of skills and feats, are we using 3.5 or Pathfinder rules?
