Any chance that one of my fellow party members kills us all is too high of a chance.

What, really? You must hate high tech games. The entire parties fate can hang on any number of skill checks. Piloting, bomb defusing, security system disabling, grenade scatter...

For that matter even in D&D the whole parties fate can hang on a rogue or rangers stealth check, or even a Bards diplomacy check.

Letting the DM decide whether a wild surge check is required helps support the idea that fate is ultimately in the hands of a whimsical, capricious menace.

Who of the DMs amongst us can say, hand on heart, that they don't fit this description? :D

Is the potted plant a Hitchhiker's Guide reference?

Judging from the roll it takes to get that response...

As I've said in another thread, nothing stoked my imagination as a kid more than the old 2e Tome of Magic and the original Wild Mage class and Wild Surge table. This is one of the subclasses I was most excited about being in the PHB and I can't say I'm disappointed. My players in particular are going to have a blast with it. They're a pretty chaotic bunch in general, though. A Rod of Wonder is practically a running gag in my 3.5 campaigns.

Once, when defending a wizard at the top of the tower, the party Ranger fired off the Rod and all he did was make grass grow all over the place. The rest of the party chastised him*, but he got the last laugh later in the fight when he was able to cast Entangle on a couple of Chain Demon's chains from reaching the wizard at the last second.

*In their very first game of D&D they also chastised him, in good fun of course, for failing to put any ranks in Knowledge (Dungeoneering). His response? "I didn't know there was going to be dungeons in this game!"

As to the whole DM wishes thing, well that is on anything in the game. The DM shouldn't be the fix all for bad game design.

I think you misspelled "Awesome" as "Bad".

I love this thing, I was thinking wizard for my first char but this looks super fun always wanted to play an old school wild mage. Different classes appeal to different personality types, this one is for the gamblers. As for the rest of the party, hey you don't have to stand next to me. I guess if you do, get ready to duck.
