"No need for apology," assures Amina with a smile. "It's a simple conversation, with few expectations. I'm interested in what he has to say. The waterbearer provided water? Surely that was before the hydra was in the oasis? Between the hydra and his wounds...could you not have found your way somewhere safe?"

"Forgive me if I pry, but it is hard for me to understand. Even if you were committed to defending the oasis, you needed more men after those raiders came, yes? And you needed to kill that hydra. Otherwise, what were you defending?"

Though Naji sulks, his ears perk up at Amina's questions.

Na'im, the eldest of some twelve or thirteen years, glances back the way his mother went uncertainly. "Yes, before the monster. Well, there was one time, I don't remember it because I was a child. There was a drought, but father said that one night the water bearer set forth, and when he returned before sunrise he brought dozens of urns of water, more than a man could carry." It's clear Na'im is conflicted in relating the story, his logic telling him it was an exaggeration, but his sense of wonder believing his father's tale as scripture.

Furrowing his brow, Na'im opens his mouth and then closes it. "I– we– Mother sent a rider to the tribes in the mountains for help," he points toward the Al-Yabki Mountains that you crossed the other day. Seeing that Amina isn't convinced yet, he continues slowly, "We couldn't leave the water bearer and he was too hurt to move. We...it's hard to explain..." he dissembles, frowning, looking over at Usqual who seems perfectly at ease.

OOC I think you have the wrong image for the water bearer?

OOC2: How does it compare to the dead man we found outside? He died of a heavy slashing blade, but also had fire injuries (that seemed unrelated, as in the sword wasn't the source of the flame, but some other things instead like a spell).

OOC3: The Water Bearer has no clothing matching that scrap of cloth?

Lal took a step back, leaning on his tabar a little. "My initial training was at the Monastery of Silaish Vo. I have traveled much since: I dared the surgical archives of Syr Daria and I consulted healers at the Great Mosque. I also had, more recently, the privilege of reading from the medical library in Huzuz, but only for a season. Despite this, I am unsure about this wound... it is peculiar that you resisted it, yet are unable to heal it... Vizier, your thoughts?"

GM: Thanks for the catch Ancalagon. Fixed.

The wound is different from the dead man found in the crags outside – that wound was a clean cut from a slashing blade. Malsoor's wound is deeper and wider, but something made to cleave rather than cut and draw across the flesh; and his wound has necrosis that the dead man didn't have. And yes, the fire wounds on the dead man indicated they weren't part of the blade that cut him.

The cloth is rust red. The water bearer has a red sash across his chest that doesn't quite match that color, but comes close.

"One rider, alone? The deserts are dangerous. How long ago was he sent out?" Amina presses gently.

Na'im recounts the days in his head, eyes scanning the cavern ceiling flickering from the lantern light. "Yes, we only had one to spare. The tribes of the mountains owed a debt to the water bearer, my mother said. He left two days after the attack...19 days ago." Shaking his head, Na'im again gestures to the mountains. "He should have been gone no longer than a week. We don't know what happened to him, and the mountain tribe sent no messages."

Akilah shifts her wait from one leg to the other, with her arms folded "Healing is not my specialty, however I will do my best. If I may approach?" if allowed Akilah will attempt to examine the wound and the water-bearer to determine the best course of action in returning him to 'normal'.
OOC: Would use guidance to assist with any check related to treating the patient. Remove curse? Greater Restoration? Heals? New schedule has me asleep during American "active" time. sad panda...

Approaching with Malsoor's consent, Akilah examines the man's injury. Malsoor's wound is consistent with other wounds she may have seen which prevent the natural course of the body's healing. While it is unclear if there is a curse upon the man or not – such things do not reveal themselves to cursory medical forensics – the greater restoration spell should free the water bearer from such an ailment, regardless of the ailment's origin.

GM: This is an effect which reduced his hit point maximum.
Thateous if you want to examine him more closely, for example looking for sign of disease or something else, you can make a Wisdom (Medicine) check.

"These Khaldunis they came from Ubar. They must have fallen far if they steal the very nature from their brethren. It was right that your Sheikh would try to end their dishonor. It is sad that your tribe was defeated. What would these Khaldunis do with your water?"

Salahuddin looks at the Jann.

"Could you perhaps show me where this Khaldun Oasis is located. I have never been told of these Khaldunis. Perhaps you could tell me of them? We have been tasked with finding these raiders that have attacked here and elsewhere within the desert and these Khaldunis seem to fit the description those who survived have given. If they are involved in these raids it would be good that I learn of them."
