D&D 5E So, anyone else think we might be getting an Undermountain module soon?

Well, it certainly seems that Perkins got slammed hard by having to do Curse of Strahd and Sky King's Thunder back-to-back, in addition to the decision that they didn't need to release so much adventure material ever year. Wouldn't shock me if you are right about what went down.

It'll be interesting to see what books they release in the next couple of years. Just in terms of adventures, it seems they have heavily seeded a couple in particular:

- Great Modron March keeps getting brought up in the books, lots and lots of seeds planted: serious Modron obsession in 5E, and a great opportunity for Planar exploration

- Gates of Firestorm Peak gets namechecked in both the PHB and DMG, and Volo's has some really intriguing hooks for Mindflayers: everyone loves Cthulu, right?

- Demons got their big show in OotA, maybe Devil's will get their time (maybe also in a Great Modron March, who knows?)

- Undermountain is getting mentioned a lot, don't forget the Xanathar is also in Volo's Guide Beholder chapter and the cover of the Monster Manual: probably movie related plans.

- Genies, and Genie politics, get some fair amount of attention in the MM. Would expect the City of Brass to end up related to something, somewhere along the way.

- Deep sea adventuring, with details of underwater societies and ruins, would seem plausible: maybe a bit of return for the Kraken Society

- Something Goblinoid related, a war campaign perhaps, bringing in a lot of the hooks from Volo's

Any other plausible candidates?

I recall a long while ago that MM mentioned on Twitter that they were looking at statting up an archdevil.

I would love to have a proper write-up for the City of Brass.

Then what you want is the 2e Secrets of the Lamp sourcebox for Al-Qadim. There is no chance they will ever again detail the City of Brass to the insane extent they did in that product. Plus, you get tons of info about the other genie courts too.

I just had a look at the table of contents for that book. Is 7 pages on the city really that “insane”?

Hi, I'm a Mindflayer, but don't let that worry you
1. Chris Perkins said there were clues in Tomb of Annihilation about the next big adventure.
2. There is an item in Tomb of Annihilation that acts as a teleport to Sigil.

Just sayin'. :)

Pages 22 to 30 are specifically about the City - not counting the giant poster map, of course, or the other details sprinkled though the sourcebox. Also remember that this was 2nd Edition; every part of those sections is detailed descriptions of places politics, and NPCs.

So yes, especially in contrast with the paragraph from 1e, the 5 paragraphs in the 3e Manual of the Planes, the 3 pages + sketch quality map in the 3.5 Planar Handbook (which was really just a broad-strokes take on the 2e info), etc, yes, the 2e sourcebox has an insane level of detail, I'd say.

And that was before 4e just bulldozed the whole cosmology and rearranged it for whatever reasons.

Soon no. Official, I hope not. Because I've been working on my own version to release on the DMsG when the movie comes out. If they are working on an official version, they might pull mine *G*

Isn't the movie they're working on going to be set in Waterdeep/Undermountain? My guess is that, if so, any Undermountain adventure book will be released to coincide with the movie.

That's what I'm counting on.

last thing I want is a mega dungeon. I just dont find undermountain interesting, or any gigantic literal dungeon something I desire.

But, I know it's a popular thing to want but I dont really understand the appeal.

I understand this feeling. A mega dungeon is certainly not for everyone. But it can be very enjoyable for the right group with the right attitude. And of course, "mega dungeon" has as many connotations as their are D&D gamers :)

I will say doing UM completely is a crazy amount of work. The easy part is re-doing more than a dozen poster size maps. Did you know there are a couple hundred rooms on the first level alone? Now try to come up with working ecologies that use that much space. And of course, even the empty rooms need to have interesting descriptions.

Good thing it's a work of passion, the effort will never be financially rewarded *shrugs*

If it's the item I'm thinking of, it's actually a gate key for a gate between Sigil and Arcadia, which would be the first plane - other than the Outlands itself since the Modron March begins when they literally gate-crash the town of Automata - that would be affected by the March.

Not to mention the frankly absurd number of references to the Modrons and the March throughout the books, core and AP, since day one. If it isn't the next, they have it on their radar.

Perkins probably seeded clues for multiple future stories, though, since that has been their MO so far...

Rod of Seven Parts somewhere down the line also seems plausible, given all the attention the Aarocka and Wind Lord's keep getting: maybe a Modron March for the Outer Planes, and a Rod of Seven Parts for the Inner Planes...?

A Feywild Adventure down the line seems fairly likely, plenty of hints and seeds for that.

Isle of Despair gets namechecked in a suggestive way in the DMG, but after ToA I dunno if we will see that all too soon.

Historically, the best clues about upcoming adventures have been:

- Adventure books. For example, Storm King's Thunder told us that Artus Cimber and the Ring of Winter would feature in a future adventure (which turned out to be Tomb of Annihilation).
- Novels. For example, RA Salvatore's Hero told us that Acecerak was now residing in Chult. Unfortunately, the novel line has been discontinued, so this well has dried up.
- The Dragon Talk podcasts, particularly the Lore You Should Know segments.
- Acquisitions, Inc. games at PAX. Chris Perkins likes to incorporate upcoming adventure themes into his games.

Maybe there will be a clue at the Acquisitions, Inc. game this Saturday.
