My local game store needs to ship every hobby cover book back as they had the spine defect (line down the spine and some small scuffing). It's really hard to see unless you're looking for it but WoTC is insisting that they are to send all of them back even if the customer is willing to purchase it 'as is'...

My FLGS confirmed this. Apparently, they were shipped in boxes that were not full, with only inflatable padding to make up the difference, thus allowing them to shift more than usual and abrade each other’s covers. The copies on the bottom also had wear from the cardboard corrugation.

The picture in the article looks like "travel damage" (book rubs against cardboard box, for example) rather than a printer's error.
But I don't have a physical copy to inspect more carefully, so I could be wrong.

Good news, not all of the Special Edition versions were affected. Just picked up mine from my FLGS, and it's completely fine. The person there actually brought up the fact that their stock wasn't among that affected, so they don't need to return theirs. I'm wondering if it's a regional thing, as I've seen reports (including here) of damage in the Northeast, but the stock here in Arizona appears to be unaffected.

My book is fine, but it is going to likely show a lot more damage than that within 6 months of traveling via backpack, sitting on a game table, etc...

This is why I would buy a whole set of books a second time if they were soft cover digest sized; like, 6" x 8" or something like that.

Despite being a bit under the weather I went to my FLGS only to be told nope, their entire stock has to go back. Their entire stock was scuffed and pretty warped. Thankfully I got it on DnDBeyond to hold me over.

My FLGS just sold me a defective book, they even pointed out the printing error on the spine and said it's happened to the entire production run!
At least these few innocent books will be saved from the fires of hell.
