B/X Known World
My players ran into a slaad. They saw it in the distance, on a cliff edge, and it was painting something on an easel.

When they got closer, they could see it was painting them watching it paint them, in greater detail then it could have seen from the distance. And some of the characters had weird or ominous changes, like the void touched wizard had a starry outline. They also did not like the fact that the paladin's head was painted as if it was on fire and half burnt.

They tried to buy the painting. The slaad said "No thanks, I don't care for some, I already have any" and disappeared. They left the painting on the cliff edge as they were scared to touch it.
That's fantastic.

I would propose that the Spelljammer campaign is essentially like having taken the sundry adventure locations as seen in previous Setting books (or Fizban's or Bigby, for that matter), and stringing them along in an ostensible story. In 64 pages, that book packs a lot of dungeons thst can be excised from the story and used in different ways.
That's refreshing to here. Everyone I've heard reviewing Spelljammer commented on the linearity of the adventure, so you are the first one I've heard describing it having modular parts.

Exactly. Good business beats good design every time.
Ideally, WotC wants D&D to be Legos. You buy a Lego set and they give you instructions on how to build the thing on the box, but they don't care if you use the parts to build something else. They're just not giving you extra pieces or instructions on how to do anything but what is on the box. Further, they aren't really in the market to sell you the big tub of blocks anymore; they make a lot more money selling you Avengers HQ or the Millennium Falcon.

Well, it's both. The modular parts would have to be played in that exact order if run as a campaign (unlike, say, SKT, where you can visit the various modular giant locations in any order, or even skip all but one, while playing the adventure), but parts could definitely be taken out and run individually with little or no modification.
