In session 0 we make sure everyone is onboard with the kinds of stories the game might generate. If a storyline seems heading in a direction that might reasonably make folks uncomfortable, checking in to make sure there are no issues just seems like the caring thing to do. As well as making it clear that any participant has the right to express their discomfort at any time. Absolutely consent is important; I will never force a player into a story that they are not enjoying.

I don't even understand how this is an issue. We play games for the fun of everyone involved.

I’m not sure how to explain what is so very much worse about a forced transformation of your body into a different and abhorrent body while you are alive and conscious…it seems dead simple obvious to me. I’ll have to think about it.

If the issue was extended mind control, instead, like permanently changing your character’s mind about an important thing, event, or person, would it make sense for you?
No warnings needed there either: forced or unexpected alignment change was a thing in 1e and nobody really batted an eye about it.

We are all individuals it’s true.

If my friends like the alien movies or vampire movies or lots of geeky fiction I don’t see why this is a special case.

Not matter I guess. They felt it was and made the call.

I go into D&D strongly suspecting very bad things can happen to my character.

Fomorians cursed out party recently and my cleric and my pal’s cleric both were deformed with a slower speed and penalties. Will new editions of MM have disclaimers about monster effects? Maybe. Maybe dmg will
Just push more discussion in general ahead of time as. Blank thing.

When it happened, it was a question of who has what prepared, what if we have another encounter before we are well and how long will it last. Good fun. Adversity.

I really cannot fathom anyone at the table taking such fiction seriously or relating it to their life. I am sure there is someone who might but if that is the bar they need disclaimers on…a whole lot of stuff. 🤷‍♂️
Yeah…I don’t think any explanation will help, here.

If I can think of a good angle from which to explain, I’ll still post it, but probably the disconnect is more embedded than can be addressed in this forum.

Times have really changed. On the one hand, it seems like we are fostering less resilience all the time; on the other hand we are trying to acknowledge people need help and historically repressed problems to the point of harm.

I am sometimes incredulous but I have a cultural lens as well. Can’t say for sure I have a lock on the best course.

On the one hand we give kids more free passes in school and in early sporting activities. On the other hand we are more aware of the rampant bullying and nonsense people historically have endured.

I dunno. It seems bonkers to me but seems like shrugging and letting people have their safeguards is less likely to leave someone behind.

I just play with friends and my kids. It’s easy. I have heard horror stories about some DMs engaging in downright creepy behavior; maybe some guardrails would help their groups?
