Yeah, just starting gold and let them purchase their equipment with that. They won't get everything they want, but that is the nature of it. Starting off small and growing.

They get starting wealth by class. Sometimes I'll even make them roll it, instead of letting them have max or average. But they rapidly get more gear anyway.
