'if a creature has a fly speed of 40' and it wants to go directly up, how fast can it fly in 1 round? I realize that it says half speed, but does that mean no double move action...and no run? How far can he go up in 1 round?'

In the spirit of the old addage, "A good defense...", i vote for "Disintegrate" ;)

but page 20 of the DMG doesn't discuss vertical double moves. it says: "Up Speed: How fast the creature can climb." Not how fast the creature can climb with a move equivilant action. Just "How fast the creature can climb."

It doesn't say that it must move on a horizontal to take a run action. Btw, couldn't it take a run action down, also?
