I used to write for the gaming industry during the d20 boom. Used to. Very minor things: fluff pieces, item descriptions, the occasional article or review. Nothing special. It's been years since I've done that, but the work gave me a definite sensitivity to tabletop systems that I'm eternally grateful for as a GM and a player.

While I miss the crunchy book-keeping of full polyhedron-set games like D&D and Pathfinder, I've discovered that it is hard to find a group that has the time to commit to learning all the nuances those rule sets carry, much less the time to commit to even skimming the entire player's handbook. This is, at times, greatly vexing, but it has also forced me to discover and try simpler, more streamlined systems--Remnants, Qin, Esteren, Apocalypse World--better suited to "lazier" parties who don't want all those rules bogging them down. The new paradigm is refreshing and, I'll admit, difficult to break away from now that I'm exposed. If you ever have a spare session and aren't sure what to do with it, I recommend giving one of those simpler systems a shot.
