I started playing in '89 which was shortly after the introduction of AD&D 2nd edition. Many of the people in my play group started with other game systems and didn't even touch D&D until 3rd. I thought I was edging towards grogness. The way this poll is going makes me feel on the younger scale.

I thought it was only two, 3.x and the new 4e. I don't see 3.5 and 3.0 as significantly different.

Playing 4e reminds me more of how I didn't like many of the fiddly bits in 3e. Though I will admit it causes me to reconsider 2nd edition as a viable game. I miss Planescape with all its weird locations, cosmopolitan cities and pseudo 18th century english.

The ranger has always been my favorite class. A close second would be the druid. I guess I just love roleplaying the rugged outdoorsman and his faithful hound. I hope that 4e eventually gives us pet rules before I start playing a character instead of running a campaign.

I have whole heartedly changed over to 4e. I abandoned 3.x D&D for other things like running World of Darkness rpgs or playing Warmachine miniatures. Currently I run a 4e campaign for my friends and if anyone offered to run 3.5 D&D instead I'd opt out of the group.

I still think it is silly to get worked up about how gish sounds. But in the spirit of community I'll throw my vote towards spellblade. It has a nice ring to it, isn't an actual class and there currently isn't a magical item by that name. Fighter-mage or that groggy version fighter-magic user...

I am supportive of using the name gish. It has a long 2nd edition history as it is in reference to githyanki being the penultimate fighter-mages. I think it should be used in hobby for trying to reach that balance of a spell caster that can also excell in melee. Gish isn't optimization elitist...
