Start off with the Players' Guide and the GMs' guide. If you like what you read, move on to picking up some of the nation books. All the books are available on PDF from RPGnow.com. The files are high quality and reasonably priced.

I don't think there are any modules specifically designed for 2 players, but it should be easy enough to tone down existing adventures. Just reduce enemies by 1/2 or hitpoints and damage of "solo" monsters by 1/2.

Savage Worlds would work fine. I'd avoid the actual Serenity game. It's far and away the worst iteration of the Cortex system. My personal recomendation would be to use Traveller. Any edition from the old classic books to the new Mongoose version or pick up a used copy of T20.

I like D&D 4e Combat Tracker over the others because it's the easiest to import things from the monster builder. It does everything I need it to do, is easy to learn and is pretty lightweight.

I'm not concerned with Pathfinder specifically, but this is the forum I read most for other d20 stuff like True20, D20 Modern and others. Having this forum separate from the others is very convenient for me.
