D&D 5E Spell Gem in Out of the Abyss

Thanks guys. The Warlock does have to cast the spell to store the spell, using a spell slot presumably. So, I suppose that to have it as an extra spell slot, the Warlock would need to have the luxury of time to short rest after the casting? Or does it not burn a spell slot?

D&D 5E Spell Gem in Out of the Abyss

I don't know how I'm missing it, but while the Spell Gem is listed in the back of the module, I can't seem to find exactly where in the adventure it turns up. Could anyone offer a bit of guidance in regards to this?

D&D 5E Save or Suck Style Spell Houserule

Back in the days of 2E and 3E, "save or suck" spells were arguably very over-powered. Yet, I rarely used them. Largely this was based on the concern of getting unlucky with the result being that I'd burn through spell slot after spell slot, and waste round after round, without having a useful...

    D&D 5E Not dying?

Since I would never lie to my players, it sounds like we're in agreement. I love agreeing on the internet.

    D&D 5E Not dying?

Doesn't sound like we'd handle things different. If a new player joins the game they are made aware of how the game plays. I have very different death and dying rules than vanilla 5E, and the players will very quickly understand what they're getting into, and can decide if it's for them. My...

    D&D 5E Not dying?

The DM's job is to make sure your players are having fun. In most cases, in regards to life endangering scenarios, that means that individual characters are going to occasionally die (if they didn't, then the players wouldn't take the risk seriously anymore, with less risk the game would feel...

    D&D 5E Not dying?

If characters are never at risk of dying, then many players will find the game less rewarding and possibly downright dull. Here is an excerpt of mine from another thread regarding my suggestions on handling character death... "Part of the art of DMing is (and shhh don't share this with your...

    D&D 5E Dying House Rule

A high risk of individual character death is for the enjoyment of the players, not an attempt to be antagonistic to the players. You may not feel the same sense of "the greater the risk, the greater the reward" and that's ok. When my players barely survive an encounter there are high fives all...

    D&D 5E Dying House Rule

I don't have any issue with rez being obtainable actually. My longest running campaign that I ran from '89 through to the mid 90's with mostly the same characters was memorable largely because the players had grown so attached to their characters and all the trials they went through. Of course...

    D&D 5E Dying House Rule

I've never found wipes to be difficult, particularly in 5E. However a wipe is clearly less than desirable. I have run games that ended in a wipe, but they weren't common. As a DM, the old adage "scare don't kill" is a philosophy that I apply mostly to TPKs. However, if the PCs make egregious...

    D&D 5E Dying House Rule

Your memory for 2E is better than my own. I remember a thing called Thac0 and another thing called system shock, along with that wacky 'ol dual classing system. Other than that, 17 years has faded my memory of most of the details. My comparison was with 3E. 2E would be a more difficult...

    D&D 5E Dying House Rule

Cleric abilities like Revivify don't bother me quite as much tbh. Do they feel a bit cheap? Yes...but really, the cleric is way weaker than in 3E and I almost feel as though spells like these give the class a purpose. Healing is weaker than the older editions (unless if you're a life cleric...

    D&D 5E Dying House Rule

Coming from 2E and 3.5, I've felt that the dying rules in 5E lack the teeth of those prior editions. While you can certainly wipe a party in 5E, the threat to an individual that they might fail a save or suck death effect, or be low on hit points and get instantly killed when they went below -9...

D&D 5E [GUIDE] Blade, Book, and Chain: the Warlock Guide

The problem I see with Ascendant Step is simply that as a Warlock, so many abilities compete for your concentration. Does Ascendant Step not require you to use concentration unlike the actual Levitation spell, or do I have to cancel my Hex, Darkness, Improved Invisibility, Polymorph, etc to...

D&D 5E Why do Sorcerers have so few spells compared to other full Casters

Well, a Sorc isn't just a blaster. He's also a highly effective buffer. In any event, I think there's an RP answer and a mechanics answer to your question. On the RP end of things I believe even non wild magic sorcs are considered beings who are conduits for controlling powerful energies that...
