    D&D 5E Is D&D a Story or a Game? Discuss.

That's rather the point, isn't it? What isn't covered by the rules isn't really playing Dungeons and Dragons. It's just freeform roleplaying. Which is fine, and generally every session will involve at least some of this, and possibly a great deal of it. This is a meaningful distinction, because...

    D&D 5E Is D&D a Story or a Game? Discuss.

I disagree on a fundamental level. There is no world except that which the players and the DM create. That's a setting. It informs the game. The story is what you call the game after the fact. The story is what does happen. The game is all that could happen. Dungeons and Dragons is a set of...

"Make believe" is neither a game nor Dungeons and Dragons.

Easy question. It's a game. Before it's anything else, at least, it's a game. You don't need a bunch of rules and numbers to tell a story. Edit: To be more clear, you can certainly tell a story at the gaming table, in various ways. But Dungeons and Dragons itself? It's a game.

Not much versatility. 3 maneuvers is very little when compared to the spell list of a caster. They tend to have as many cantrips as that by that level. Like I said, I consider Riposte, Precision Attack, and Trip Attack to be such generally useful choices that you'll almost always take them...

I feel as though the number of dice needs to scale better, or be set on a different "refresh" rate than short rest-based, as the current small number of dice you get strongly stifles the flexibility you can have. I find myself gravitating towards a very short list of maneuvers because there's...

Well, I can't speak for everyone. It was a hypothetical point that started the whole conversation, I do believe. At the very least, I'd like to see the battle master expanded--combat superiority dice are not a bad mechanic, they just need more maneuvers and more scaling. I'd like a more tactical...

I disagree. You could give the fighter a spell list, call them maneuvers/"blade magic", sell it as "optional", and there. The structure is already there within the system.

Ah, yes, a casual dismissal of a point as "edition wars". I tip my hat to you, sir.

Fighter is widely played for a reason that's described in the introduction to the class given in the PHB: it covers a wide variety of archetypes. It's not a narrow niche, there's nothing really that pins it down to a specific build or character. Fighters include archers, sword-and-board tanks...

I don't think it's "oldeditionitis" so much as players hate to miss and/or spend their action doing nothing. It feels bad and many want to minimize that chance. We can throw out phrases like "bounded accuracy" and show that hit probabilities are better than ever, but I don't think that's going...

They do say familiarity breeds contempt. It's not that surprising in that light; a lot of people play fighters so there are more opportunities to see its flaws.

Because, regardless of flavor or whatever fluff concerns you might have, the cleric kicks ass. Spirit Guardians gives it AoE to rival that of the wizard/sorcerer, and if that's not enough, you can go Light domain for Fireball. Arcana domain can get the gish cantrips and smite things with flaming...

ZENDIKAR -- Where Magic: The Gathering and D&D Collide!

Pretty sure planeswalkers are now powered-down significantly from their original concept (which was basically archwizards/gods). I don't think it'd be needed as a class because as I understand it, a planeswalker is just anyone who can magically travel between planes now, which pretty much...

D&D 5E So... what happened during the playtests?

I would've been fine with those if they were presented as optional packages, with the option for players to pick and choose individually if they so desired. Kinda like how backgrounds ended up (though I know a lot of people don't seem to even realize you can customize your background skills and...
