[5E] Urban Intrigue Campaign - Gating the Sandbox

A novel you might raid for ideas, characters, situations: The Element of Fire by Martha Wells. I rather liked the factions and faction NPCs in the city of Defiance Bay in the game "Pillars of Eternity". Also somewhat in its sequel, Deadfire. A forged invitation risks turning out a bit like a...

[5E] Urban Intrigue Campaign - Gating the Sandbox

Or you forge an invitation; though that probably requires borrowing a valid invitation, to copy its layout and style, and to copy the signature on the valid original.

Systems You Left after One Bad Experience

I played 4E once, and figured, okay, that was worth trying. Hurray for those who enjoy it. To each their own.

What Would You Want From A Game About Defenders of The Faithful?

This. As a member of a minority religion, I am painfully aware of what happens when one religion declares its members are "the faithful", and declares all others not worth defending. When you say "the church", do you mean that there is only one church? There are all too many historical...

    Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?

In this case, those two factors - DM engagement, and DM preparation - went hand in hand. He didn't care much, so (a) he neither rehearsed narration nor internalized the content well enough to describe it in his own words and (b) we didn't care either. Unfortunately, the "we didn't care either"...

    Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?

Maybe the literary content, but insofar as the relationship between "literary" and "content" is already a point of contention, I'd rather say that the literary effect or impact was reduced He didn't convey excitement or strong interest in the written text. For his purposes, "it's a generic...

A question on some game systems

I'm green with jealousy. How many of the people at the table had read (some or all of) Iliad, Odyssey, Aenead, or similar works? (Or Mary Renault novels?)

    Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?

Okay, if (a) the quality of form isn't important (b) whether (X in-game phenomena) suggest (Y category of room) (for various X and Y) is what's important (c) the content matters (d) the particular words that are used don't matter (e) the way that they are said doesn't matter but "matters"...

What would be some good metics to evaluate RPG rules/systems?

Interesting point. I'd guess that it also matters how many of the choices are front-loaded. In AD&D you have X choices to make, before you have a playable entry-level character and can make your first action declaration to specific events in the scenario. In 5E D&D you have Y choices to make...

What would be some good metics to evaluate RPG rules/systems?

So noted. A game which rates higher on "complexity" isn't necessarily more "the game you want" than a game which rates lower; if you're looking for a game to run with children, the reverse. I'll adjust my usage to metrics. (I will only rate a game on metics, if it's set in ancient Athens.)

Looking for good "against the cult" adventures - preferably urban

Ah, correction accepted. I'm talking about DDEX 1-10, "Tyranny in Phlan", and not about "Tyranny of Dragons". Thank you.

    Is RPGing a *literary* endeavour?

I have no opinion on whether that action would add anything to thread; no one has done the action which you just now described, not as you describe it. Ovinomancer made an assertion which I considered untrue, and I challenged that assertion. I made no statement about what Hriston *intended*; I...

Looking for good "against the cult" adventures - preferably urban

I ran most of the AL Season 1 adventures, some at a store game and some as a home game. I have read, but not played, "Tyranny of Dragons". Here's my thought: the AL Season 1 adventures can be fun, one by one, but they don't actually tell the DM much about the cult as a whole. They'll name, and...

What would be some good metics to evaluate RPG rules/systems?

Perhaps someone designing this system could produce multiple versions. Version A asks six questions. Version B asks six questions, three of which overlap with Version A. Issue both versions. Have people rate games. See if those ratings are useful to others. Ask those who read the ratings: if...
