D&D 5E Spell level of Warlock Invocations for Dispel Magic DC

Yeah, the bit about being able to target a "magical effect" in the description of Dispel Magic was leading me in a different direction, but it's sure a lot cleaner to deal with that way. Thanks for the Sage Advice pointer!

D&D 5E Spell level of Warlock Invocations for Dispel Magic DC

What rule(s) would prevent Cloak of Flies from being affected by a casting of Dispel Magic?

D&D 5E Spell level of Warlock Invocations for Dispel Magic DC

What spell level should be used to determine the DC for dispelling persistent magical effects created by a warlock invocation that either (1) doesn't explicitly involve casting a spell per se, e.g., Cloak of Flies, or (2) is written to allow casting of a spell without using a spell slot or...

    [Online][5E] D&D 5E Campaign with a seat opening up

[EDIT: Seat filled, thanks all!] Hi there! For the last couple of years I've been running a story-driven campaign in a homebrew setting that mixes a few elements of Victorian steampunk into the standard Renaissance/Medieval fantasy milieu. (A little Jules Verne never hurt anyone, right?)...

D&D 5E Commanding your Steel Defender

I read the thread about "Using Commands on Familiars and the Like," and I'd like to throw out a follow-up question around the level of detail folks generally allow at their table for the control of these companions. Specifically, let's look at the Steel Defender, where the text reads: So two...

D&D General Tell me about your campaign

Main story arc: PC's stumble upon a secret order devoted to researching a magical "technology" with the potential to revolutionize society... but at what cost? Very slow burn as they learn more about the magic/technology, meet members of the secret society (and the OTHER, slightly-less-secret...

D&D General DM's: How transparent are you with game mechanics "in world?"

Totally agree wrt dropping in-game clues as to what's happening ("You're quick, but he's... extraordinarily fast. It's hard enough to keep him in view, let alone hit him.") But I've been trying to keep the OOC discussion out of it as much as possible, at least in the moment. It really snuffs out...

D&D General DM's: How transparent are you with game mechanics "in world?"

Nah... it's not that bad overall. He's supportive of inexperienced players at the table, makes an effort to pick up on and develop interesting plot hooks, and generally tries to let everyone have a turn in the spotlight. But once initiative is rolled... look out, baby!

D&D General DM's: How transparent are you with game mechanics "in world?"

I'm curious where the rest of you DM's tend to draw the line between in-game observations and OOC info? For example, I have a player in my group who is laser-focused on combat mechanics, and generally assumes that every die rolled in combat should be unambiguously identified to players along...

    D&D 5E Homebrew cantrip help

That's a lot of really great feedback, thanks everybody. To clarify, "being buff" in this context translates into "useful in melee combat without burning spell slots," even though he definitely recognizes that from a survivability standpoint, melee is really not a great place for him to be. The...

    D&D 5E Homebrew cantrip help

Yeah, I've noticed that 5e has cut way back on spells that give a numeric bonus to anything, leveraging the advantage/disadvantage mechanic instead wherever possible. That totally makes sense for streamlining gameplay and preventing stacking creep. In this case, the player really wants to be...

    D&D 5E Homebrew cantrip help

Right, magical armor would be fine. The requirement for no physical armor is there to try to head off abuse by other spellcaster builds. Given his specific (and very non-optimized) build, I don't see this spell being problematic for him per se. I'm just trying to think a little more broadly and...

    D&D 5E Homebrew cantrip help

I've got a player who's running a Lvl 1 5E wizard with a pretty non-traditional build & backstory. He's looking for a cantrip that will buff his strength stat and/or bonuses. We've gone back and forth iterating on what it might look like to knock a 3.5E-style Bull's Strength spell down to a...
