I think minotaur's are the mystery race

As do I. A "giant" race that doesn't come with the baggage of being an established D&D race (and that fits well into existing games well) would be super-keen with me.

Me three. I've hoped for goliaths since the polls started a few weeks ago. After considering the miniatures issue, I think goliaths are a stronger contender than minotaurs.

Furry Artists in your D&D. MADNESS.
I think this was the important part

There are quite a few races that are essentially anthromorphs and this requires something different from either pure humanoids ala elves/humans/dwarves OR pure beasts.
The skills are different between drawing a person, a lizard, and a lizard person. Without practice you don't do a good job anthropomophizing a bestial creature. For example I have gnolls and lizardfolk one from MM1 and one from other artist each why don't you tell me which you think is better done? Note out of the entire PHB I think the Lizardfolk was the artistically best of the anthromorph races.

Realize I was being silly. Also (although it reduces any legitimacy I have in this thread), I am a furry.

While I agree that the second picture of the gnoll is a better picture, it's not what I think of when I think "Gnoll". That picture is far too noble and good looking. Gnolls to me are more scruffy, bestial and menacing, like the fourth pic you present (although I think that makes a better Trog than lizardfolk; The Lizardfolk should be streamlined reptilian, like an anole, while the Trogs should be reptilian brutes like a komodo/crocodile).

Though, I think the best Anthro depiction in the MM is the Kobold. The face could use a little more smoothing out, but it's actually a very solid picture.

I don't think they'll have a large-sized race in the PH. The difference from Medium to Small vs. Medium to Large is substantial.

That being said, Dragonlance minotaurs are Medium...

As am I not that it helps my argument.

The gnoll picture is a placeholder I'd intended to use a better one I remembered of a gnoll tracker that was grungier and more animalistic but I'm still looking for that one. It had the gnoll bending over to sniff at some tracks and it was clear from the hand details they were closer to a paw than hand in build. If you wanted a less brutish lizardfolk I can do that as well. The lizardfolk picture I used is from an artist who also does WarHammer work and it can carry over a bit. This is probably more in line with your thoughts.

The pictures at the bottom are closer to what I'm thinking. An anthropomorphic head shaped like this guy, or perhaps more Velciraptor-like: sleek and long.

So a head more like this guy if you removed the crest?

Yeah, that's a little more like it. :) Either him or the Poison Dusk lizardfolk guy without the crest.
Hey, it was the closest I could get to the shape of the anole head you used as an example. If you discount the crest and only consider the head it's actually very similar in shape, more so than the squash-muzzled look of the PD Lizardfolk. I should know given that I played with the damned things as a child :p

Also I believe we've succeeded at completely derailing the thread beyond all resemblance to its original topic. So getting back to that vein I wouldn't mind minotaurs as a core race and it's possible. Now if Drow were the mystery race and half the PHB was elves as a result I wouldn't just skip 4e I would boycott Hasbro entirely and not mind the inconvenience which resulted.
