Trivia Dept: Waaaay back in 1984, when Dave Trampier was trying to get a Wormy anthology published, I asked him about that piece, and he wrote back:

"There's an interesting story behind the DM-screen (so to speak). That felt-marker "painting", which I titled "D&D Momentum", (since D&D was gaining momentum at the time, and the composition is structured to keep the eye moving in a circular motion, and also as a wordplay on "moments" because the piece is a collage of moments). Anyway, that piece was the last assignment I undertook before I left TSR's employ in late 1978. The interesting thing is that the previous summer, Tim Kask and I talked Gary into making a Dungeons and Dragons pinball machine. That piece which you see on the DM's Screen was designed as the backglass for a pinball machine. (I even designed a playing field for the machine before I drew the backglass, though I've no way of knowing if it would have been mechanically feasible.) Somehow, the pinball idea got scrapped sometime after I'd quit, and they decided to use the piece for a DM's screen. Although they did a nice job on the reproduction, the original piece was closer to a square in proportions -- a good hunk of the dragon's wings got cut off."

At one point I found a zip of sketches by Lockwood for the 3.0 release, including a full-size version of this lovely lady in white on a black background. Sadly it's been lost in the ether...

I've also used several pieces from here as desktop backgrounds over the years while running Traveller, and this Midnight background when I was running that setting. Looking back, I guess I tend to change my background to something appropriate to what I'm GMing at the moment... should probably start hunting for an ACKS-appropriate wallpaper.

The GM screen! I remember a good 10 years ago in Toronto, when I was a wee lad, there was this pick up game at a Convention. The DM had this screen and he was so proud of it: somehow it's this amazing screen that is super rare. I wanted it so badly!

That said, it looked more spread out in person than in this pic. Now we know why!

Also: Death Gate Cycle! Good times!

I still have mine. It's even in pretty good shape.

Never read a word of it, and found the art entirely seperately (I think I got it off a TSR bonus disc of some sort). I just liked the scene and found the composition of elements perfect for desktop wallpaper.

With a few temporary exceptions, I've been using this one for about 8 years. On the larger screens I have to stretch it and I can't find a larger version of the original, but I like it so much I still always keep it.
