Firstly, it belongs on something called the PlayER Handbook, not the PlayerS Handbook.

This trend to bash the art because there aren't enough people in it is silly to me.

First of all, it's "Player's" -- singular, possessive.

The overall campaign may be about a group, but you should probably be the hero in YOUR story. And just as you look through the lens of your own story, so too does the art. Or at least, it could be interpreted that way.

No offense meant, Ed, your post was just a good jumping off point for something that's been bothering me since the poll about favorite covers.

His eyes aren't narrow, nor is the conversation about his very dark irises. He has no irises because he has no whites in his eyes to tell if his irises are dark. All of his eyes are the same color as his skin.
He most certainly does have whites in his eyes, which are at any rate a different color than his skin. I can't see any irises, though--at least not at this resolution.
