Legend
For a name, what about alluding to the legend with something simple and evocative, like Myth?

It also sets you up for great comic book puns like, "Hit and Myth," or "Did you Myth me?" and so on. :)

If you want to keep the martial flavor, Mythic Fist or Myth Strike or something...

Also...for a master of Tae Kwon Leap, I'm very disappointed not to see an attack called 'Boot to the head.'

(^_^)

Seriously though, nice job on your first M&M character!

Thanks, couldn't have done the stats without your help! Now to the task of actually penning down his backstory...

"Uh, excuse me, my name is Ed Grueberman..."

I wanted to include a Boot to the Head alternate effect... but it just seems like it would be broken powerful? ;)

EDIT: For those who don't remember The Frantics "Boot to the Head" skit....

EDIT EDIT: Couldn't resist...

BOOT TO THE HEAD / TAE KWON LEAP (Damage rank 3 + Effects: Strength-based + Extras: Accurate 2, Split 1, Subtle 2 ##LINKED## Leaping rank 1 + Effects: Attack 0, Split 1 ##LINKED## Affliction rank 6 + Extras: Extra Condition +1/rank, Split 1 + Flaws: Limited Degree -1/rank) [17]
 • May be used as a surprise attack completely undetectable to all but masters of Tae Kwon Leap.
 • A target hit must make a DC 11 Fortitude check or be pushed up to 15 feet away, knocked Prone, and be Compelled to attack you. If the Fortitude check succeeds but doesn’t reach DC 16, the target is Dazed and Hindered instead.
 • You may split the damage, push effect, and Affliction conditions between two targets as you wish.

This is before he decided to lose the wings. His current costume is similar, without the wings.

and yes, I know this is Archangel, it's just the best picture I could find that fit my concept.

Has anyone mentioned that for Strength-based Damage powers, any modifiers need to be bought on the total Damage rank (including the Strength ranks)?

No! Is that the rule? I've been going off of the SRD...which seemed ambiguous because it mentions adding Strength to determine rank of Damage attack but doesn't mention purchasing cost or point-buy...but I'm new to Mutants & Masterminds, so you guys tell me!

[SECTION]If you choose, a Damage effect can be Strength-based—something like a melee weapon—allowing your Strength Damage to add to it. You add your Strength and Damage ranks together when determining the rank of the attack. Any modifiers applied to your Damage must also apply to your Strength rank if its bonus damage is to benefit from them. However, any decrease in your Strength reduces the amount you can add to your damage, and negative Strength subtracts from your Damage! Likewise, anything that prevents you from exerting your Strength also stops you from using a Strength-based Damage effect. If you can’t swing your fist, you can’t swing a sword, either. On the other hand, a laser blade or thuderbolt staff does the same damage whether you can exert your Strength with it or not.[/SECTION]

EDIT: It does seem like, if you're paying for Strength-modifiers as per the normal ranks of Damage...then there's no benefit to making it Strength-based? Actually, it's a slight hindrance in case an effect ever prevents Strength-based powers or reduces Strength? Why would anyone make their Damage powers based on Strength, in that case?

EDIT EDIT: Hmm, so there are 3 ways I can interpret this section, using my PC as an example... Which is right?

(1) No Cost Whatsoever for Strength-based

Li Po's Legendary Fist (Damage rank 6 + Effects: Strength-based 0 + Extras: Alternate Effects 5, Multiattack +1/rank, Penetrating 6) [23 points]

(2) Include Strength modifier only when calculating Extras

Li Po's Legendary Fist (Damage rank 6 (9 with STR) + Effects: Strength-based 0 + Extras: Alternate Effects 5, Multiattack +1/rank, Penetrating 9) [29 points]

(3) Include Strength modifier in base power rank cost AND Extras

Li Po's Legendary Fist (Damage rank 9 + Effects: Strength-based 0 + Extras: Alternate Effects 5, Multiattack +1/rank, Penetrating 9) [32 points]

You don't pay for your Strength twice when calculating your damage rank.

However, the Multiattack would have to include your Strength rank if your attack is Strength-based.

Penetrating does not HAVE to include it. You have the option of leaving it at 6. Note that the nature of Impervious defenses means that there's very rarely a need to have Penetrating at full damage rank. Someone would have to have an Impervious Toughness of 18 to block a rank 9 damage effect. There's no partial reduction with Impervious Toughness...it's all or nothing.

So in this case, I would suggest reducing your Penetrating modifier to pay for the difference in Multiattack cost, leaving the total power cost the same.

Sorry I forgot about that wrinkle of strength based damage. The point of doing Strength based is that it makes your attack power into a 'weapon' kind of. It lets you use your Strength AND your power damage in a single attack. But you don't get a free pass on Extras to the damage. Your Strength rank is treated as ranks in Damage for the purpose of those modifiers.

You don't have to pay for those ranks AS damage because you already paid for them as Strength.

I say keep the wings, even if you don't need them. Tricks villains into targeting them to mess with your flight. :) Plus your name is Hawke and they look cool!
