D&D 5E Anyone ever try the Stuck in a Fantasy type game?

Anyone ever try this? A game where the 'players' are sucked into a fantasy realm and into the 'bodies' of their PCs? Think Joel Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series. I've wanted to do it for a while but Jumanji finally pushed me to get serious about it.

I've been dying to try something new and different and I am going to give this a chance.

If you've tried this, I'd like to hear from you: What worked? What didn't work? How long did it last?, etc.

For any interested, I'm having the players roll up two PCs:

1) Their "Fantasy" PC- the one they would like to play.

2) Their "Real World" selves: I had each go here:

And then send me the stats. I assigned them their own 'Real World' class. I picked that sight just so that everyone would take the same quiz and there was nothing personal with the assignment of ability scores.

The players will begin their adventure. Should any PC die, they will revert to the Real World character in the Fantasy Realm until they kind find a way to magically "re-enter" their PC. Or, they can choose to play as themselves and level up that way. (for instance, we have a former Army Airborne in our group. I made his Real World class a Fighter).

Otherwise, its a standard quest adventure. But the goal is to escape the fantasy world

Not really. It always sort of made me beg the question: what if you want to stay in the Matrix?
Then you start down a bumpy road of talking about IRL issues that IRL people may be facing...
Then you start getting into addressing those issues...
And yeah...

So no. I've never really be interested in trying this. The plot always seemed contrived and likely to run into territory I'd rather not take a game. Plus I always suspect players wouldn't actually act like themselves.

I didn't like it. It made the character I was playing feel even less real. It was annoying not knowing anything about the game world due to never being there before and also annoying knowing that basically no one we talked to mattered because they were part of a game and that no one in the game could help us escape.

We ran it as a 1 shot but no one has been interested in revisiting that game.

Never forget.

I loved that show! But shockingly, it wasn't the inspiration for the Campaign. I blame it all on the new Jumanji movie...

I'm prepared for it to crash and burn but I still want to give it a try.

I'm preparing "Plot Twists"

-There will be other people (not necessarily good guys) stuck as well, who will be 'noticeable' by them using real world movie quotes.

-A couple of Set-pieces battles will shift back to the Real World, and the players, if still looking like their fantasy selves, won't be recognizable to friends and family.

I'm sorry to hear that those who have responded haven't had the best luck with this. It doesn't bode well...
