TOON the cartoon RPG, anybody play it?

toon-sm2.jpgI was having fond memories of ancient times and TOON the roleplaying game and it got me wondering; has anyone on here played TOON? Any success stories or fun anecdotes to share?

I kind of have the itch to run or play a game but I remember it never really went anywhere “back in the day”…

I always thought it a beautifully written unplayable game. But then again, that could just be because it is about the concept of humor, and I have none.

We had a lot of fun with Toon back in the early 90s.

I've got several memorable stories, all from a friend who was fantastic at getting that zany comic feel as well as physical comedy. His Toon was "Splam the Wingding".

In one episode, Splam had an infinite roll of 1 cent stamps. At some point they trapped a vampire in his coffin, so they decide to mail him away. Splam, with his sooper speed races around the coffin, festooning it with stamps.

For the rest of the night, my friend kept makes exaggerated blerg! faces as if he was trying to get the taste of all those stamps off his tongue.

In another, Splam is sneaking aboard a zeppelin. Now, Splam was as dumb as a bag of dumb rocks, as long as those rocks were extra dumb for dump rocks. So his sneaking consisted of him marching straight up the aisle between the seats, his "disguise" that he kept calling out "I am Jelly Donut, I am Jelly Donut", thinking that's what would be served on a swank zeppelin like this. One of the other Toon, more clued in on the swankness, attempted to help out ... not quite successfully. "No Splam, you're a Boston Creme!". My friend got this ephiphany look on his face, proclaiming "Ohhhhhhhh, snnnnnnnnneaky! I AM Boston Creme. I AM Boston Creme."

My nephew bought it once upon a time (he was 11 or 12, I was in my 20s). We spent the whole afternoon playing all the scenarios that came in the rule book, and laughed until tears several times that afternoon, but that's all my experience with the game. Must think to ask the nephew or his brother if they ever made anything out of it.

I couldn't ever see playing a campaign using the system, but I have played one or two nice chill-out one-shots of it to wind down at the end of a games con.

Yeah, we never did "campaigns" - but we did plenty of one-shots with recurring characters.

It is was my brother's favorite rpg back in the day. I would, occasionally, pull it out at around 1am to run one-shots when we had friends over, because by that time of night, none of us could remain serious.

There were several large expansions.

I've run the core over 25 years ago; I sucked at it back in the day. I own the supplements still, because they're fun to reread.

Played it once at a con. It was a blast.

I actually really liked that you had a maxed bonus max on your rolls, and that could come from a combo of your attributes and skills. Is that part of normal core?

It seems it would make an interesting choice in a lot of rpgs and depocts the naturally talented and the highly skilled quite well.
