I find most of Wayne Reynolds' humanoids horrendous, but his other stuff is generally acceptable to me.

A bunch of pictures I would really like to see replaced would be the one for the Displacer Beast (probably the only picture I dislike by Sam Wood), and the ones for most of the Good Dragons, specifically those that have butterfly wings (I believe they are the Brass, Copper and Gold dragons).

The Bronze Dragon was painted so beautifully, why change the style for the others? :D

Anyway, the topic of art in D&D is a tricky one, mainly because the greatest strength of D&D art is that it is varied. If there was only Todd Lockwood everywhere, people would get bored very fast.

For a perfect example, ask people about the magmin picture, and you will receive answers that will cover the whole spectrum, from "Glorious" to "Stinky".

For personal preference, I don't really care for the Blink Dog picture. It just doesn't strike me as a "dog". I really quite like everything else I've seen. The figures are more active, come alive better and there is a sense of depth.

Speaking from the perspective of someone in the print industry, I'm worried that the underwater combat picture will be a little disappointing when it hits print. Blues, especially subtle shades, are very hard to print. They tend to go purple. There is a lot of blue in the mystic theurge and some in the mummy lord, so the color might shift but I don't see it as a problem in those. They aren't in areas where you are expecting a certain color.

Of course, my biggest concern is the layout design and backgroun graphics. Will the 3.5e remove the so called "ruled lines" that many gamers find so annoying? Will the parchment look that usually grace the chapter's first pages be made less subtle so it won't obscure the rulebook's text?

Will they finally add an additional header label in the magic chapter that tells me if I'm in the A section or the B section (since spells are alphabetized and occupy the bulk of of PH)?

Most importantly, will the place those wonderf art in a way that would complement the page's text and not scramble them. Sometimes I can't tell when a paragraph ends and a new indented one begins.

Don't forget the new art for the Tarrasque.

Thank goodness for the new Blackguard pic. The old one was so unbelievably awful that I couldn't believe anyone ever approved that crappy design. And to make it worse, there were two pictures of him in the DMG! The DMG had, hands down, the worst art of the three core books. Hopefully 3.5 rectifies it.

I really like most of the new art I've seen, although the Blink Dog is my second least favorite of all the new pictures I've seen.

My least favorite is the new Terrasque. Man, they should fire that artist... It looks like a turd with an underbite!

The tingling means it’s working!
I like the new art. Fewer buckles and spikes.

But the Blink Dog is worse than they original art. The original was serene. The wise, relaxed pose made it clear that blink dogs are in fact Lawful, intelligent creatures. The new Blink Dog looks like a generic mangy cur. Deifinitely not Lawful, definitely not Intelligent, definitely not Good.

The underwater combat pic is pretty, but why are the combatants oriented as if they were standing on firm ground? The pic should be tilted, or even flipped upside down--once you start tussling underwater, you're not likely to stay upright. Speaking of which, the art should have emphasized the 3-D nature of underwater combat, showing combatants at different depths.

Enough rambling. New art = better.

I just wish someone would redraw the Yuan-ti. The one I've seen in Races of Faerun and Monster Manual II (IIRC..same picture) were pretty bad in comparisons to the rest.
