Right now wall of vines does that and wall or portals does something similar along those lines.

London has had a Smog problem since 1272 due to use of cheap coal which produced clouds of choking smoke leading King Edward I to ban its sale on pain of torture and death. The ban didnt help because forest clearances meant wood was entirely unaffordable by the poor.
Of course smog really became an issue post industrial revolutuon so the Wall of Smog works for a Steampunk or similar industrial setting.

My inspiration was actually Strega Nona, but I guess out of control pasta is a pretty common thing.
Hmmm.... you may have a point. Nothing's finalized yet, though I do really like the word smog.
