Certainly, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the MCU was their inspiration here (although I would be surprised to hear them admit it).

I wouldn't be surprised if the original Rod of Seven Parts was the inspiration for the Infinity Stones. I ran a campaign to find the parts back in the 1980s.
Also, this:
All inspiration is circular, especially in closely related genres.
The infinity stones predate D&D by a couple years at least.

Kinda. The Infinity Gauntlet concept was from the early 90s.
Right but the stones were early 70s.

I even (it turns out mistakenly) thought his was the first published multiverse.

Yeah, but Paul's right - it goes in circles. The stones may have started appearing in the 70's, but the idea to collect-em-all and put them together is a late 80's, early 90's thing. And look at that Dr Who picture! That box looks just like a Cosmic Cube!

The Rod of Seven Parts has been in Seven Parts since all the way back in 1976, and adventurers have been trying to reassemble it for just as long!
