  • The books are near final and almost ready to go to print
  • Psionic subclasses such as the Soulknife and Psi Warrior will appear in the core books
  • Named spells have art depicting their creators.

Dragons are innately magical, yes. That doesn’t mean their flight is an act of magic. It’s simply a facet of their nature. And I notice no one wants to address giants existing and being able to stand, and walk, and not collapse under their own body weight.

The current fighter is not even supernatural. But it could be, and their supernatural abilities would not need to be defined as magic. Again, if giants exist, why can’t Goku?
Giants are supernatural, and so is Goku, because neither can exist in a non-magical world.

A Reminder:

John Henry was a Steel Driving Man who died, in Victory, with his hammer in his hand.

He was a normal human being in the folk stories. He was just strong enough, fast enough, and good enough to out-drill a drill machine. And carved a tunnel through a mountain in a single day, big enough for people to walk through.

Magic and Supernatural only exist where we say they do. And if a Giant can ignore the Square Cube law, then by all the gods, John Henry can carve his way through a mountain in a day's work!

Ah my friend you are living my dream! Ive always wanted to run a small comic book & gaming store, maybe when I retire. I too am on Pacific time zone (Los Angeles, CA).
Thanks - it's a lot of work, but it's very rewarding. Ah, who am I kidding? Some days I play D&D at work. On those days, it's not a lot of work. However, I don't do that as often as a lot of people might imagine.

My hope is that they'll offer a similar early release for the digital, my players will definitely be wanting to peruse this.
I think that if they offered the digital version early, at this point that would just amount to moving the release date forward. (Or maybe be seen as "punishing Amazon", which they would never do!) So, no - other than maybe a WotC-only "digital-physical bundle" that might give you access to the digital early, and giving game stores (a small and shrinking market) their books early to make us feel better about ourselves, I don't think we'll see the DDB version early.

High level fighters are not normal folk. What exactly sets them apart from normal folk varies from character to character. They may come from some supernatural ancestry, or be chosen by the gods, or fate. They might have gained power through exposure to some magical energy. The rules don’t prescribe the means, so that players have the freedom to define it for themselves, as suits their concept.

It seems like I can call it whatever I want, as long as I want to call it magic. Because any time I dare suggest a character be capable of superhuman things by means other than magic, we end up having this same argument.

Of course that’s the case. Like, literally, that’s what high-level PC abilities do.

Getting enough XP (if your DM even uses XP; it seems like few do anymore) necessarily entails going on fantastical adventures, delving into mysterious and magical places, fighting monsters and faeries and perhaps even gods. One does not do such things and remain a humble farmboy. What exactly causes the transformation from farmboy to hero varies from story to story.
But whatever that transformation is, it gives the character supernatural power, whether they cast spells or not.

If casters are running roughshod over your campaign on a regular basis, I don't know how else to say it. It's the DM's fault. PCs of all classes sometimes come up with options that make overcoming an obstacle or changing direction of the game. Celebrate the win with the players and adjust your plans.

I have never had casters consistently dominate play whether I was playing or DMing.

EDIT: maybe what I just said was a bit harsh. I've just never seen the types of issues that people seem to have in a decade of play. You do have to be more flexible for higher level play because the PCs are more capable, but the DM always has options. Even if it means discussing the issues with the players and adding some house rules or banning a handful of problematic spells.
The folks who regularly play fighters & barbarians in the games I've been in usually only care about being relevant in combat (usually to the tune of "I swing ..and hit - next", and often "tune out" for the other parts of the game. I have seen them get annoyed when the spellcasters take out or circumvent an enemy before they get to lay into them.

I myself generally don't play higher levels (usually 9th-11th, 15th is my absolute stopping point) as I don't like the sort of "Avengers Assemble" superheroics that start to show up.

Still, if folks are going to be playing into those upper levels I'd like to see the martials have access to abilities that are as wow-inducing as the magics the spellcasters get. Different, but relevant and "on-theme" for the heroic tales of old.
