Productive assets (especially IP) can generally survive bankruptcy. It’s the creditors that lose out. If debt was in fact transferred to an unviable company they could sue. But it could get messy.

This is about a sudden drop in sales, not long term trends. Speaking of which. Even a quick glance at Amazon shows sales rankings are down pretty much across the board, even with deep discounts . This consistent with a drop in demand. Which is what happens before a new edition comes out.

You could always break out the expert set. So instead of quickly dying in the Caves the PCs would quickly die on the way there.

Speaking of Minecraft it is all so self-referential now. It’s a variant on D&D, the variation being that it is like D&D, at least it’s like what D&D was.

Why is WotC doing this? If some people want to charge, and pay, for what others do for free, whatever. But WotC doesn’t have to promote it? Why promote it?

Maybe. Roll20 does have a free version and is not that hard to use, and its not alone in that.

I don’t like roll low, though some % based games make up for it by otherwise being excellent. I don’t like yet another disparate sub-system for AD&D, which was my biggest problem with AD&D

Over the years I have built up quite a bit of resistance to buying new rpgs, for the reasons mentioned above. But then once in a while resistance will breakdown and I make an impulse purchase. Results are pretty random, but it does not happen very often.

There were no animals (as monsters) in 0D&D? I pretty sure there would have been some in expert. Lots in the first MM.
