Big changes a'coming! Merging the D&D forums

I don't like this even a little. If numbers and visits are down, I'd put the blame on the fact that these forums are dreadfully, PAINFULLY, excruciatingly slow at times, not split forums. I'm on an 80mb internet connection and have issues opening threads, going to the next page, etc, yet have...

    The More Things Change

I've played in, and DMed the Forgotten Realms for 20 years. I've never encountered the almost urban-legendary "OMG the uber-NPCs are ruining my campaign!!11oneoneeleven" syndrome. Just because some DMs are bad, and trounce over their PCs, doesn't mean the setting is bad. Just because there are...

    Blue Dragons: Sand or Sea

WHITE ALLIGATOR: Sometimes, alligators display a genetic mutation involving two recessive genes which causes the offspring to be white with blue eyes, or “Leucistic.” (They are not albino!) Probability of this happening is 1 in 10,000. It is uncommon for these to survive long in wild because...

    Blue Dragons: Sand or Sea

Dragons have to survive to be apex predators. They get tossed into the world and left to fend for themselves. I daresay it's easier for a white hatchling to catch what it needs to kill to survive and avoid being killed, while in some snowy wasteland. ADULT dragons can live where they want...

    Blue Dragons: Sand or Sea

However, a lot of us do like the idea that white dragons, (being, you know..white and all) don't live in forests, because of their complete lack of camouflage for that environment. I know this is contrary to how some people feel, but I prefer some semblance of rationality behind monster...

Is a storm coming RE: skills and feats?

I like having the packages, and the idea of ala carte. I don't like the idea of getting "extras" just for taking a package. At least for my group, some small amount of system mastery is not only appreciated, it's encouraged. The way they initially described it handles that, because they...

    What is the Sundering?

I'm just glad it sounds like they are un-Spellplaguing FR. That sounds exceptional.

13th Age Discussion: A Love Letter to The Best Parts of D&D

Darn, I was interested until I saw "4e" and "healing surges". Good luck with it though

    Cantrips as encounter powers?

I don't like short rests at all. I'm not "dodging" anything. I thought saying I don't like people recovering spells/abilities would cover it. If I had my preference, it would work like 3.x. Clerics (and many X per day magic items) would recover their spells/charges at a certain time each...

The need for monsters as beings rather than statblocks.

I get more of a bird vibe than crab or roach, honestly. Even the last one looks more lizardy to me.

    Cantrips as encounter powers?

I object to and reject the entire premise of regaining spells/abilities in the middle of the day. The "day" is a pretty precise measurement of time that I prefer for all refreshing of abilities and powers. I don't like the "encounter", which could be 4 rounds or 4 hours, because it is...

The need for monsters as beings rather than statblocks.

Not sure where anyone is getting "crab" or "cockroach" from Hook Horror...but ok. Having an exo-skeleton does not make one a crustacean or roach.

Seven spell levels in the Playtest

9 for Arcane, preferably 9 for divine. I could live with 7 for Divine for the old school feel. Spells every level, no thanks.

    Cantrips as encounter powers?

No encounter powers. I would rather see cantrips = Intelligence (or charisma, wisdom, whatever) 18 int? 18 cantrips per day. 14 charisma? 14 per day. In fact, I would rather they be unlimited or limited to your casting Mod than be an encounter power. ANYTHING, except encounter powers.

    Per-Encounter Powers

    Good riddance to "encounter" powers.

D&D 5E Ed Greenwood to write 5E's Forgotten Realms

There were no Dragonborn hooters, shades, tieflings, or other shoehorned in races in the Grey Box. Elves were elves in the Grey Box and they couldn't teleport when people shot arrows at them (but not any other time!) In every way, the grey box (and ever the 3rd edition post Time of Troubles)...

D&D 5E Ed Greenwood to write 5E's Forgotten Realms

The Neverwinter Trilogy is the worst set of Drizzt novels ever. You can tell R.A. hates the changes (as he's mentioned in public). Retcon away, for the love of Mystra.

D&D 5E Ed Greenwood to write 5E's Forgotten Realms

The "realms shattering events" were all driven by the game, not the novel authors. R.A. Salvatore is on record as being very opposed to the Spellplague in particular.

D&D 5E Ed Greenwood to write 5E's Forgotten Realms

It's The Simbul, fyi. It's a testament to the world building itself that the players know and care about the NPCs that exist. That is why FR is my favorite setting. I couldn't give a rodent's backside about anyone in Eberron, Dark Sun or the 4e realms. Pre-4e destroying the Forgotten...

Separating Attack and Utility Spell Slots

The same way a party one of my characters is in now. One of the wizards doesn't memorize a lot of attack spells. He tends to buff the party, rather than deal direct damage. It's a character choice. A perfectly viable one at that. For me, personally, D&D spellcasters aren't Combat first...
