D&D 5E Adventures in Rokugan Arrives August 5th

I was hoping for more information/rules on the Shadowlands taint. I've gotten the PDF and the term "taint" doesn't appear at all. A cursory skim revealed the "wrath of the corrupted elements" table and other bits and pieces on the effects of the Shadowlands (found mostly in the included...

D&D General WotC Has Owned D&D Longer Than TSR Did

What is the “Forgotten Rum” story?

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

Hussar, first you wrote about Japanese cultural prevalence in Western Media. Then you wrote about a "TON of Japanese representation in D&D and always have been", comparing it to the supposed lack of Middle Eastern themed material. So when Al Qadim is pointed out, you disparage it as being 30...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

As Sorcerers Apprentice pointed out above, I was referring to Al Qadim which had much more TSR produced supplementary material than either 1e or 3e of Oriental Adventures (although AEG put out a bunch of stuff for the 3e version in Rokugan, of course). Anyway, I'm not trying to get into an...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

Both true and good points. I just kind of get the feeling that one of the things that Daniel Kwan et. al. were angry about was the focus on Japanese culture to the relative exclusion of others. I get the limitation on panel members but I would've liked to have heard the opinions of at least one...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

The same can be said of Middle Eastern culture, which still has two representatives on that panel. Middle Eastern culture also has quite a bit of representation in D&D and fantasy role-playing (seeing as how this is an RPG forum, I don't really care about "Western" media in totality, although I...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

So the panel on using Asian cultures in D&D game design included; Daniel Kwan, Steve Huynh, Ammar Ijaz, Pam Punzalan, and Ahmed Aljabry. hmm . . . So, there were no Japanese cultural representatives there. Seems rather non-inclusive, perhaps even discriminatory to me.

D&D General Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings of Color

Of course, the man who invented Hobbits (. . . I mean Halflings) described the "by far most numerous . . . and representative variety," the Harfoots, as being brown of skin. This description is found in the prologue to the Lord of the Rings. In the book itself, he described Sam's "brown hands"...

D&D 1E About the Asian contributors to Oriental Adventures, or Who even were these guys?

Just curious, but why do you think that only one of them has a name you might call "typical" in Japanese? I live in Japan and I have met/known Japanese guys with every one of these first names and surnames (not in the same combination, though, and of course I don't actually know any of the...

D&D 5E What does Midgard do that Forgotten Realms and Wildemount don't?

The Gnomes are interesting. From what I remember (I don't want to crack the book open-that would require me to actually stand up and walk a few feet. Much too much effort), they played one too many tricks on Baba Yaga, who is essentially a god-like being in the campaign. She cursed them and then...

Cubicle 7 No Longer Producing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth

OK, that's pretty . . . harsh. I own all the TOR books and all the AiME books and enjoy both. For me the level question doesn't bother me or take me out of Tolkien's world. I think AiME works great as an example of how the 5e rules can be stretched to evoke a different feel and would work well...

Cubicle 7 No Longer Producing The One Ring and Adventures in Middle Earth

Yes, I have bought all their Adventures in Middle Earth for 5e and loved all of them and even had the collectors edition of The One Ring 2nd edition on pre-order, just as a collectors piece and because I love their art as well. It sounded like the 2nd edition book was almost finished. I wonder...

D&D 5E Vancian to Zelaznian magic

Yep. It's a feature, not a bug. I never really minded Vancian magic but I did want a better in-world explanation for how it worked. I like how now the game has other options for using arcane magic (sorcerer and warlock, of course) with different levels of flexibility. I like their in-world...

D&D 5E Vancian to Zelaznian magic

This is true but I’m not looking for an exact duplication of the magic system in the books. I think cantrips (especially like firebolt or ray of frost) and signature spells (all of which require no preparation or “hanging”) could approximate the raw power aspect from the books.

D&D 5E Vancian to Zelaznian magic

Yes, I’m thinking don’t add any spells to the daily allotment-the wizard would still be limited by the number of slots they can cast per day (but with the possibility to go beyond by accruing exhaustion levels I mentioned above). The ability to hang or prepare a spell would only be limited by...

D&D 5E Vancian to Zelaznian magic

Good point, and the PDF is only $12 on drivethru. So, I’ll give it a look. I enjoy reading other games and systems anyway-even if I don’t end up playing or using them.

D&D 5E Vancian to Zelaznian magic

That’s why, in the system I’m proposing for my own campaign, it would only apply to Wizard casters. All others would use the system and in-world explanation found in the PHB.

D&D 5E Vancian to Zelaznian magic

Yes, but the original series had nothing about this magic system. That all came in the second “Merlin” series, which was published after D&D came along. That’s why I referenced Zelazny’s attendance of Gen Con as Ed Greenwood’s guest and the possibility that the magic system explanation was in...

D&D 5E Vancian to Zelaznian magic

I understand what you’re saying but I guess we just disagree (and that’s OK, of course). I’ll admit it adds a little book keeping and player/character planning but not too much for my taste. I suppose it’ll help if any player of a wizard in my game has read and enjoys the Zelazny books and buys...

D&D 5E Vancian to Zelaznian magic

I think I might not have explained well (again, thanks for helping me clarify). In my system wizards could “hang” as many spells as they have time but only cast a spell out of combat as a ritual, limited by their slots available each day. So, for example, it would be impossible to renew fly all...
