Kobold Press Releases Black Flag Reference Document

I don't understand the legality here. So much of this is still a straight lift from D&D. Can anybody explain what qualifies as derivative and what doesn't?

Worlds of Design: You're Playing it Wrong!

I think about Monopoly in this context, and how EVERYBODY I met used the same Free Parking rules that weren't in the printed rules. (And nobody used the auction rules.) In the 90s, I didn't know anyone who used D&D'S XP rules as written. I think the only thing that's really important is that...

D&D General WotC: Novels & Non-5E Lore Are Officially Not Canon

I mean, I guess they want to keep their game materials consistent and that's fine. But Dragonlance canon is the Dragonlance novels. Drizz't canon is the RA Salvatore novels. And if I'm running something in one of the established campaign settings, MY GAME is canon and whatever it says in the...

    D&D 5E NeMoren's Vault: Back After 20 Years!

A friend ran this as part of a larger campaign where we rotated DM responsibility. (So even though it was a canned adventure, a lot of the details got absorbed into the larger campaign.) I remember it being a lot of fun, but most of the details beyond the basic set-up are murky now. Maybe there...

Gail Gygax Sued By Movie Producer

Gary's "original" dungeon and "original" rules predate OD&D. I believe the argument she's making is that she still owns the formative material that predates the published OD&D.

    Skill Feats In Pathfinder 2

If you look at high-level play as simulating heroes of myth/folklore/tall tales, then these types of skill use are entirely in keeping with the source material, where characters are routinely able to do impossible things because they're so good at doing x.

D&D 4th Edition Player's Handbook Now In PDF

This book was available at launch in PDF. I still have my copy. They released the first 6 to 10 PDFs in hardback before dropping the practice and pulling all of the existing PDFs.

And Here It Is - Wil Wheaton's TABLETOP RPG Show Is TITANSGRAVE: THE ASHES OF VALKANA

The whole point of the Tabletop brand is that they promote games that they like. That's like saying their Settlers of Catan episode was a cheap marketing gimmick to sell more copies of Settlers of Catan.

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks Realms & Sundering

That depends if you see the various D&D worlds as different brands. I suspect that Hasbro (and likely WotC) do not.

    D&D 5E Why should I allow Multiclassing ?

The reason you're getting a lot of push back is that you keep saying things like the bolded paragraph above. You're not comfortable simply saying "I think it's okay for DM's to place limits on their games." You feel compelled to take the extra step and say that any player who would want a...

    D&D 5E Why should I allow Multiclassing ?

I don't understand your argument. If folks want to play a character concept that involves multiclassing (e.g. a fighter becomes a cleric) how is " if multiclassing wasn't allowed this would be impossible" a reasonable response? "Fighter becomes Cleric" is a valid, rules-supported character...

    D&D 5E Why should I allow Multiclassing ?

Huh? So to clarify, your position is that no player in the history of D&D has ever wanted to create a multi-class character for story reasons? There's never been anyone who's ever played a fighter who later becomes a cleric because he thought that would be an interesting thing to play? You are...

D&D 5E On the healing options in the 5e DMG

Yes. RPGs have an implicit contact between DMs and players that they will agree on a play style that suits everyone. If the players want to optimize to "beat" a setting, then that's OK. But if players are more interested in creating individual characters that they really like but don't fit...

D&D 5E The Wonkiness of Tool Proficiency

They're limiting the number of skills for balance reasons, not to maintain verisimilitude. If it bothers you that someone can start casting spells that quickly, it's easy enough to establish fluff around that: Establish that folks are studying on the side or provide some sort of mystic trigger...

D&D 5E The Wonkiness of Tool Proficiency

I don't find Tool Proficiencies confusing on their own. (You're either proficient or not. That's pretty straightforward.) The only issue I have is with the Skill/Tool overlaps, like Musical Instrument and Perform.

D&D 5E Interesting (if you like geeky analysis) little anomalies in the 5e NPC statblocks

Is it possible this is another case of a simplified feat snuck in? (In this case, the one that grants the extra 1st level spell?)
