The thing is with point buy they don't need to be balanced, as the player has the choice as to what suits their character best, both mechanically or even if they wanted a more balanced character for RP reasons. If you did random rolls and came up with one of those two you are playing a straight...

I agree esspecially about it being "problematic", ie just something that is difficult to handle, not something that has to necessarily be avoided completely.

Stuff like that is hard to tell if it is going to impact play. I find as a GM while there might be a set plan for the BBEG, having his background and understanding his motivations, means that if that plan needs to change you are better prepared to improvise.

4th Ed which was mainly two page spread for encounters was really designed to make things easier for the DM. There were complaints at the time that it was dull to read, but I found in play it was much more manageble. Also because from the ground up 4th Ed was designed to be very playable, easier...

If you are on a budget can I recommend.... Crooked Staff's Print and Play dungeons (does Sci Fi stuff as well). Pay what you like have video tutorials. It's all pay way you want. I made the stuff illustrated below from his Dwarven Pillars tutorial. From his blog. It's all just print outs stuck...

I'm curious as to how convoluted or detailed your adventures are in that case? What sort of games are you running? How much is player driven and how much is RP. Same goes for anyone where prep time is less than play time. I'll admit I don't run heroic fantasy very often, mainly Call of Cthulhu...
