    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

I agree 100%. The parody got a LOT of people to pick up the game. We were using the tagline "Who says "Old School" is dead afterall and going after those who felt disenfranchised by the changes in D&D 3e. The parody covers of the original 1E books pushed buttons. Once the bait was taken it was...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

Just wanted to add that despite the backstory to how the HM/AD&D license came about we had a very good relatioship with WOTC. Besides HM we were doing the D&D comic D&D branded campaign setting material (Kingdoms of Kalamar) etc. Which meant LOTS of conversations/meetings to move product...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

well... that's the popular internet version anyway. 2 parts truth. 1 part speculation. But it's not important enough for me to delve into those waters. Water under the bridge. I'll simply point out that the DVD situation was pointed out to TSR several times before it was released. Those...

    HACKMASTER Basic - for free!

Yes HM was a parody on the surface. Yes WotC made that a requirement of the license (and enforced it -- the approval process was quite strigent in fact). Didn't stop us from putting a fun, playable game beneath that veneer for those who took the time to pick up and play that game. ;) And...

    List of RPG Webcomics

Knights of the Dinner Table webstrips are posted twice a week at Knights of the Dinner Table Webstrips - A Celebration of Games and Those Who Play Them. Usually three to four pages at time from back issues of the comic (20 years of material to draw from). I try to post story arcs the run for a...

Will Next be able to do HackMaster?

It's important to remember that much of the language in HM4e is tongue in cheek. More about attitude and firing up the GM than anything else. Like a drill sergeant preparing his troops for battle. Or the fans of a football team painting their faces in thier team's colors and trash talking the...

Barb and Jolly Blackburn of Kenzer...

Hi all, just a quick post to thank everyone who has reached out to my wife and myself with their condolences. It's deeply appreciated. We're very touched by the outpouring of support from our peers and fellow gamers. In answer to someone's question up above, Amber had Cerebral Palsy. She was...

    The Pinnacle of your Collection

Wait I changed my answer... My most cherished gaming related item is the "BIG C" -- one of the aluminum letters from the Mecaa cener in Milwaukee which was salvaged by a friend after the building was demiloshed. At the last GenCon in Milwaukee I took it around to vertually everyone I could...

    The Pinnacle of your Collection

Tough one. My most cherished game possession are the three mini-AD&D core books that came out in 2000. Each signed (along with a personal note) by Gary Gygax. A close second would be a pair of d20's Dave Arneson slipped in my hand (with a sly grin) at the last GenCon he attended with a note...

Fortune Cards: and randomized collectible cards come to D&D

Same here. Those cards generated a LOT of excitement among my friends back in the day and it's still the one thing that comes up about Torg when the name is mentioned. If the Fortune Cards can take that fun and build on it and take it further I'm very interested and seeing how it pans out.

Fortune Cards: and randomized collectible cards come to D&D

True that. While there's a LOT of crap out there some of the best rpg material I've ever encountered have been found on the internet and various RPG blogs.

Fortune Cards: and randomized collectible cards come to D&D

It's amazing how many engineering and legal degrees there are among designers in the gaming industry (a lot of Anthropologist types like myself as well). Just in our small company we have three engineers (one being an engineer/lawyer). Not that those are qualifications to be a game designer. I...

Hackmaster won an ORIGINS award in 2001

Just a quick comment. I'm sure that was the perception of some. But anyone who has read the designers' foreward to HackMaster 4e knows that we loved AD&D with a passion and pretty much came out and said it. Including a bit of worship at Gary and Dave's feet for creating it. We weren't making...
