4E Out-Selling Any Previous Edition. Good? Bad.

It is amazing to see the reaction from the doubters - it won't sell, um, err, it won't sell out, oh, um, it won't need another print run this year, oh, it did?, ok, well it won't keep selling and the people that bought it will all hate it ... etc. Like it or not 4e is doing well. Congrats to WotC!

Really, No PC Gnomes! Stop Asking!

Yes, you will have limited feats to choose from. But you have all of the racial info and class info. You could also look over the gnomes in the MM and create some pseudo-feats to tide you over until the gnome gets its full treatment.

    Grognard's First Take On 4e

It must be a relativistic thing. I played RuneQuest most of my gaming life (which started in 1976). Compared to RQ - 1e, 2e, 3e, and 4e are all completely abstract and I just don't see the fine distinctions that you see. I guess this is just one of those agree to disagree things.

    Grognard's First Take On 4e

D&D has never done this. "To hit" has always been an abstraction for a series hot smaller swings and attacks. "Hit points" have always been an abstraction for toughness, luck, experience, etc. "AC" has always been an abstraction for the mobility and damage reduction provided by armor. D&D...

    Grognard's First Take On 4e

I did not say that they were linked. I said that 4e is just as abstract as 3e and in addition 4e will require more tactical thinking.

    Grognard's First Take On 4e

I wholeheartedly disagree. I think both systems are equally abstract but 4e requires more tactical thinking - you need to play as a team.

    Grognard's First Take On 4e

If you are a "simulationist" gamer then you should appreciate that combat does require tactics and coordination. Furthermore combat teams should alway leverage the use of combined arms to enhance their effectiveness. Good simulation use rules to generate expected results. 4e does that very...

    Grognard's First Take On 4e

You will need to pay attention in combat when it is not your turn - that is true. The tactical nature of the game is not all that different than 3.5 was. In 3.5 you could tune it out a bit more but 4e is definitely more of a team game than a bunch of solo artists taking their turns.

    Grognard's First Take On 4e

I know the OP may have been addressed by many in the 10 pages of posts that followed but i want to offer some personal observations from my experience running H1 and Scalegloom Hall. The rules are different but the basic framework is still the same. You still roll a d20 add modifiers and...

    Getting healing right

See ... I am a big fan of clarity and simplicity. What makes sense to some will not make sense to others. So in my view the wording should be precise. Second wind should be an action that a PC uses to activate a healing surge and that action can only be performed while conscious. Healing word...

    Getting healing right

I know. It's going to be a rules lawyers dream come true. The people that can find the trump cards in the rules will have a field day. If they would just change the wording to "as if the character had spent a healing surge" then it would not require anyone to track down every possible...

    Getting healing right

Ah the joys of quickstart rules. They say a PC cannot spend a healing surge while uncoscious, then they give us a power that says it allows the PC to spend a surge, and exception that says powers do allow a PC to spend a surge while unconscious. I hope the real rules have fewer exceptions than...

    Getting healing right

If I am not mistaken Healing Word cannot be used on an unconscious character because you need to be conscious to use a healing surge. The Cure power seems to work even when the character in unconscious.

    h1 DDI support request

CHEERS! That will be a great help. I hope. :D

    h1 DDI support request

If possible can the DDI support for H1 please include a few items for the PCs to buy in Winterhaven, maybe some simplified explanation of the rituals available in town, clarification on the healing potions, and the full AC of chainmail for a certain bit of loot.

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

True, but unless you work at WotC it is likely you will never see any of their research efforts.

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

Very true. My company does a ton of market research, usability testing, and similar research but we never share it with the public. It is a corporate asset and we don't want our competition to benefit from the research that we paid for. It is quite possible that there have been many different...

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

It doesn't. But the poster said that he had not seen any effort to gather any feedback. Well, that's not true. WotC has also stated that they conducted surveys. Just because they did not share the results of their market research does not mean that they have not done any.

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

Lots WotC book had reader feedback cards in them. I know I filled out my share. Then there are cons - they can't help but get feedback there. Just because you did not see it doe not mean it did not happen.

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

Yes. A whole lot. I don't. Let me explain. I no longer enjoy playing 3.5. I am looking forward to Pathfinder as it is looking to fix many of the issues. I am also looking forward to 4E as I feel it fits my style as a player and GM - and I love Eberron. I also know that 4E will sell very...
