(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

Team Fusion Aywin (through Svetlana's scouting) and Shade-9 (having been closest to the area) independently calculated that it would be possible for the group to move counter-clockwise along the various shorelines to reach the dimly-lit ledge on the western shore of the Hydra's Pool. However...

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

I have been prepping for a new in-store group that runs today. Once that I'd done I will be back at it. I do want to hit a post rate of about twice a week rather than once, but I will satisfy myself with pushing stuff forward tomorrow.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

Honestly, the main thing that I do with a surprise, is that I roleplay my "monsters' (or NPCs, or whatever) in such a way that if they're really unprepared for an ambush, well, they tend to run around grabbing weapons and stuff on their turn, which winds up similar to the 5e14 thing, but with...

    IN REMEMBRANCE--2026

Seems pretty young to me, but I think that @prabe was referring to the quality of his run, not the quantity.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

Yeah, but I didn't get why that equated to "why bother?" I don't think you'd make a Stealth check for whoever was granted the Ranger's check result. I don't think you ought to roll dice if a different result is going to be granted. IDR the full rules on it, but I'm not sure the Ranger (in that...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

Yeah, but I don't think that your scenario (a lone ambusher jumping a full party) ought to be all that common, so we're back to it being a non-standard (IMO) occurrence.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

Since when must paradoxes not be true? I'm not sure what you mean. Would not the point be: So that the Ranger (in that example) can say, "You hide over here" and use their abilities to coordinate with the party to actually achieve an ambush, in stead of the clanky paladin always giving them...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

Back to the OP (original premise in this case): I find the narrative dissonance of, say, getting shot, and then standing around while someone jumps out of cover, runs across a field, and stabs me for a second attack, having gone twice, to be more difficult to handle than the idea that the...

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

@mearls has a neat approach in his Moldvay project, where he's given the ranger the ability to grant their Stealth result to allies. I thought it was an interesting idea to help avoid the scenario you're referring to, is why I bring it up.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

Surprise doesn't even need to be a factor for that strangeness to occur, if you let it! (Again, I feel like it's easily mitigated by simply narrating it differently). BUT I do agree that it can be funny if you look at it that way.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

When a combat is designed to last 3-5 rounds, having two rounds of attacks before the surprised side gets to go (as could happen in 5e14) was far, far too much. It worked fine when that didn't happen, sure, but the "monsters" had to be mighty quick for that not to happen. 5e24 works fine when...

I'm done with predictions. It'll be soon enough, I guess. Time to just sit and wait.

The 5 'Tiers' of TTRPG Publishing

For an interesting side-note, my FLGS makes ~$500k in revenue pretty consistently. It's just me and 5 part-time employees. (I should mention that only 40% of that is Games. The other 60% is Comics). But, yeah - revenue is not profit. I like to joke, "I make half a million a year! Too bad it...

Hasbro Lawsuit Over Magic Card Overprints Voluntarily Dismissed

I find that I generally agree with the lawsuit's complaint, but I can't imagine how they'd win, and as SA says in the post above - they seem to me that they'd just be spending their own money to fight among themselves. Replace the board, if that's what you want. No guarantee a new board would...

(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

Team Caves Urgan's illusion masked Merrick's escape, as the younger man leaped back into the "Trophy Vault" and stood behind Torhak, who was hiding near the archway that led toward the "Vault of the Scrying Pool". Merrick covered the archway with his halberd, ready to attack the first mercenary...
