MD/DC/VA: Established group seeks 1 more reliable 4E player

Hi there! Hi! I read your intro and I am definitely interested. I'm a 25 year old gamer who lost my college group last year due to graduation/employment/babies/etc. If you are still looking, let me know. I would love to get back into a weekly game. Cheers.

Starting a new online campaign - any suggestions

I've heard good things about d20Pro, but I've never used it, myself. It's built for the d20 systems, but with a bit of tweaking it does 4e pretty easily. Also, you can pick how many of its systems you want to use and how much you'd just like to wing it. If you want to keep it light, you can...

So, let's say I'm a spiked-chain expert who picks up Shock Trooper...

According to the PHB page 220, it goes 2d4>>1d10.

Storm of Blades + Planeshaper + Epic Resurgence

Stare daggers at your players. Then say, "Behind the Ancient Black Dragon, there lurks... Another Ancient Black Dragon!" Repeat if necessary.

    Challenging a large group

Mengu made a good point about elites and solos earlier, but I think that it might benefit you to try to use more of them, rather than fewer. (He made some very good points about how to tweak them to give them some survivability.) Generally, combat moves quicker with fewer monsters, and I can...

    "Bruiser Brigade" & Fighter DPR

If we're looking for an in-your-face striker, then why not go with the obvious choice and go Barbarian? Go 18 STR and 18 DEX (easily doable with a Half-Orc). That only leaves you with 12 CON, which won't get you much from Rageblood Vigor, but you'll hit decently, your AC will be defender-level...

    "Bruiser Brigade" & Fighter DPR

Strength cleric with a greatspear is a good idea. That allows the cleric to use Righteous Brand at a distance, giving to-hit bonuses to characters who may have heavy damage but relatively light to-hit. Helping a battlerager fighter to land a Crushing Surge, for example.

DM questions that make you go "Uh oh"

"Everyone roll perception." The whole party rolls low. "You don't notice anything unusual."

Feats for level 6 human wild sorc?

The character builder and compendium both say that you do not need to be a Shadar-Kai to use Reaper's Touch. So if it is an error, it's a very consistent one. I'd say it's probably safe to let everyone take it.

    Melee Sorcerer advice

Being able to use the appropriate implement is the issue here. The powers you suggested are good ones, but they don't use the staff or dagger, which are the only two implements available to a sorcerer. If he isn't able to use the implements, then his to-hit is going to be lower because he...

    Immediate Reaction (bloodied)

My ruling would be that the reaction occurs after the action that triggered it is completely resolved. So the baddy can't make his attack until after he's been repositioned. If he no longer has range, than he can no longer make the attack. I see the argument that it was the condition of...

    Misdirected Mark and Defenders

This. Also, someone mentioned the Avenger earlier. For the same reason as above, misdirected mark doesn't trigger the Avenger's Oath of Enmity. In fact, the Avenger's Oath doesn't even apply the marked condition, just some other effects, and only to the Avenger's one Oath of Enmity target...

    Melee Sorcerer advice

I really like your idea of using Daggermaster to make the Sorcerer more powerful. None of the Daggermaster class features specify that they only apply to melee attacks with the dagger, so they should work with it as an implement too. (It will be interesting to see if this gets errataed.) A few...

PHB2 general feats review (heroic tier)

One note about Melee Training... Characters also use basic melee attacks when charging. Non-strength melee classes (Avenger, Rogue, Druid, Charismadin, etc.) can't really take advantage of the extra movement and to-hit bonus from charging without this feat. As for Restful Healing, I don't...

    Stealth

Also, remind your DM that if you move back behind cover and hide, the monsters probably still have a good idea of where you are. They can shower the area with ranged attacks, if they have them. That's why we have rules for attacking squares instead of people. Also, the baddies can just try to...

    Avenger Impressions

The Avenger is definitely my favorite character from the PHB2 (followed closely by the Wild Sorc). The Avenger's ability to land hits consistently makes him a good striker, but he also has defender and controller flavors in there as well, with just a hint of leader. Stuff I like about the...

    Magic Garrote?

I'm not sure about this. The D&Di article says that you can use the garrote with rogue powers that have the light blade keyword. Rogue powers aren't grabs by default. Does using the garrote make it a grab? Because that seems like a pretty big deal for them not to mention it directly. Or do...

    D&D 4E Planar touchstones in 4e

That depends on the power you give them. If you give the players an extra daily-use power that does the damage (or has other special benefits) on par with other daily powers, then it may be a bit overpowering at the beginning of the game. If you give them daily-use powers that are more on the...

    Help with Rogue

If you have any flexibility on race, it might be cool to try out the new Shadar-Kai stuff in the latest Dragon. They have rogue-friendly ability bonuses (not as friendly as a halfling, of course) and some neat undead-fighting feats. Being able to pick up resist 5 necrotic at 1st level is...

    Double Weapons fixed?

I think that spiked chain doesn't have the Defensive property to balance the fact that it's a reach weapon. Either way, defensive is just 1 point of AC, so I'm not too worried about it.
