D&D General Fixing the Offense Tunnel Vision problem

Sounds like the party needs to have a chat with the local ranger before leaving town, to learn about the regional monsters. Active defense makes perfect sense to me, as long as it doesn't equate to "I postpone the end of combat for a round." How does intercepting enemy attacks work? It's...

D&D General Fixing the Offense Tunnel Vision problem

Two words: death tree. Assuming this means what I think it means, I'd say the issue is D&D's focus on hit points. What if monster entries listed a Morale Check Bonus, or a Bribe Minimum, or a Non-Combat Goal for each monster?

D&D General A Way for Players to Roll Hidden Checks

So I misread this earlier (but my solution stays the same). I thought Hawk said that rolling off-screen wasn't possible, but it now looks like "making the PC's roll is a pain because all the bonuses are tied into a player-facing mechanism which isn't concealable." Rolling the DC allows the PC...

Pulp RPGs, What is Everyone Playing?

I mean, if Modos 2 were actually printed, it would probably be on cheap wood pulp.

D&D General A Way for Players to Roll Hidden Checks

If this works for you, go for it. But it sounds like a lot of work to me. You might try turning your DC into a roll instead. Secretly rolling a d4 doesn't seem any better than secretly rolling the PC's check or secretly choosing a DC.

    The Entire TTRPG Hobby Post-Mortem

Well, bad for vampires, anyway. I'd say it's a good thing.

@Retreater seeing the world outside D&D: Glad you found it!

D&D General Blending individual checks into group checks

I'm not really seeing why the weaker PCs should get a shot at opening a door when the "strongest PC" couldn't do it. Unless . . . a smart PC is rolling on Intelligence to understand something the strong PC missed? Sure, but that seems to assume that the PCs are working together. If all the...

    Community and Thankfulness

I don't endorse being a jerk, but venting is a thing. I suspect a big reason for pro-sports obsessions is that it's acceptable to shout at full volume that someone else "SUCKS!" Me, I prefer picking up a digital rifle and shooting someone's avatar in the head. The breakdown might be in some...

    How do you define "Heartbreaker?"

The RPG usage has a sort of sarcastic tone to it to me, so I only use "heartbreaker" when she calls me another guy's name . . .

A Veteran Gamer’s Plea: Where’s the Large Print Option for TTRPG Rulebooks?

Sorry, maybe it's too late at night for me, but why don't reading (magnifying) glasses suffice?

    Vagabond TTRPG, opinions?

That's too bad. Singer bards are great for simultaneously bolstering the party and mocking them at the same time.

Generating Hexes (and happy New Years!)

D&D General Should I leave my friend's Spelljammer game?

That's a great recipe for not improving anything. However, not all play styles get along. One GM duty is deciding who fits in the group and who doesn't (unless the GM isn't the host/organizer).

Kansas City Chiefs Release Hour-Long D&D Actual Play Video

I saw some D&D while in the infantry. I think it makes more sense than with the NFL... isn't D&D about killing things? 🤓

    Romance Rules

XP for memory. But THAT one didn't have Billy Madison. And I'm not big on necros. Erm, there aren't romanceable queens, succubi or dryads in real life. Why romanceable options? Some characters, like Ned Stark (a Game of Thrones), get A LOT of potential adventures by virtue of having kids...

The First Rule of David Fincher is You Don't Rank David Fincher

My take: if someone doesn't understand what Fight Club is about, it's because they're taking how the movie was sold, with sex and violence, and they're not connecting that with what the movie has to say, which is about philosophy. It's not the movie encouraging viewer mistakes. It's the...

    Armoured MMA

A good question, and I think we see the answer in one of the OP fights. The sword is kind of useless, and the winning combatant seems to get more use out of her buckler by stabbing with it. Interesting to me: while both fighters wear their shields in the stylish, Elden Ring latidudinal style...

    Romance Rules

I hear showing ankles can get you prostitution charges in the wrong precinct. That'll do it. I was kind of dreaming up something rock-paper-scissors based: if you failed your pheromones check (i.e. auto-attraction), instead of a Seduction skill (which would probably work universally), you'd...

    How to TPK

So what can non-horror games use/learn from horror games regarding TPKs? I'm finding it weird that horror games reportedly have less threat of death than non-horror games. (I also can't remember the last TPK that I saw, but some people seem to think they're a problem.)
