Shut Up and Roll #3: It's All In The Wrist

I was trapped somewhere deep in the rotting pungent bowels of the great western Babylon called New York City. I had planned on writing my next column about the New York City Comic-Con from this stinking destitute location, surrounded by nerds, geeks, cosplayers- and the most horrid of all...

Gamehackery: Technology and Winging It: Intro (part 1 of 4)

I'll also be keeping an eye on what you have to say in the next few articles. I'm a tech geek at heart but have always had a hard time justifying using anything but just battle-mat,markers,minis and rulebooks. The main reason for this is, as you mention, random encounters/'winging it.' I've been...

Shut Up and Roll #2: That's No Moon

At the moment the main focus is being humorous. I've been trying to establish the GM's persona (crazy, frantic, rude, etc.) so readers will know where he's coming from in future columns (and hopefully find him more funny than offensive.) I would like to continue the 'story' as time goes on, but...

Shut Up and Roll #2: That's No Moon

And I appreciated it! To be honest, even if I had some comments I would have said the same thing. This is an experiment in gonzo journalism and I know it's not been very accesible. I've been trying to channel Hunter S. Thompson (... well more like rip him off!) and focus his style through the...

Shut Up and Roll #2: That's No Moon

It was a good old-fashioned mexican standoff. Sitting in my sanctum sanctorum (a.k.a. living room), I silently eyed the three goons from across the top of my GM screen. They warily eyed me back. I slowly reached into my bag of Cheetos and grabbed a handful of the golden nuggets... ...which...

What's the Best System for Running LotR?

Another vote for The One Ring. Good rules that capture the feel of Tolkien's ME stories.

A look at the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game

Thanks for the post, MerricB. I just purchased this over the weekend. Picked up 1 starter set plus 2 TIE Advance, 1 Y-Wing and 1 X-Wing. Planning on playing some warm-up games this weekend, then the following Saturday six of us are planning on playing a huge 3-on-3 game. Should be interesting...

    [October] What are you reading?

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it. I found it to be thoroughly entertaining- it was funny, fresh, exciting and a quick read. It's no literary masterpiece, I'll give you that, but I still think its the highest level of brain-candy/popcorn fiction.

Family Gamers: Of d4’s, feet and dragons…

I second the comment about cats. One of my friends has an infamous d20 he still uses we christened "cat-poop die" (but use another word for 'poop'... you know the one.) This poor die was swallowed by his cat and he later found it while cleaning out the litter box. Don't ask me why he decided to...

    More WotC reprints.

I hope it's the original 1st printing. Cheesy nowadays, but I still like them more than the 2nd printing.

    [October] What are you reading?

I am thoroughly enjoying both of these titles- especially Grant Morrison's Action Comics. I would recommend you check out Batman, Inc. If you decide to, start with the pre-New 52 volumes (i think there are two.) They lead directly into the new series that just started a few months ago.

How to Powergame in Ten Easy Steps

I like this idea. My number one item on the list (at least for D&D 3/3.5/PF) would be... When in doubt, FLANK! :)

D&D 2E 2E Core Reprints Due in May

I disagree about the lack of desire for 2nd ed reprints. I'm sure there is a sizable fan base for 2nd- maybe not as large as 1st or 3rd, but it was around for 11 years. And sure, original copies might still be available on ebay, but I've found that my 2nd ed (as well as old 1st ed) books fell...

    Who's playing Marvel Heroic Roleplaying?

I purchased the rules when they were released last year and have read over them a few times. Currently trying to sell one of my groups to let me start up a game. We meet once a month to play a Pathfinder campaign and are currently looking for another system/game to play on one of the off weeks...

D&D 2E 2E Core Reprints Due in May

FYI... this is also being discussed over in Tabletop Gaming. Anyhow... can't wait for these. My copies of all 3 core 2ED are beat to heck and I would love to have new copies.

I played a crappy character...and it was great!

I think there is something pure to rolling your stats. I have never used the point buy system in D&D, and won't allow it in games I run. I like having the rolls determine the character- helps players think outside the box.

    [October] What are you reading?

If this is your first time reading this, I believe you are in for a treat. I loved this book. It's one of the few where I finished it the first time and I immediately turned back to the first page for a second read... and then did the same for a third. Yes, I read this book three times in a row...
