D&D 5E Feather Fall hanger on

Uhm, Liberal Arts Major? I'm going to believe all of my lying physics professors, and there have been quite a few, instead of you. No offense. I use 1 round is one minute. It's an old school thing.

D&D 5E Feather Fall hanger on

Mass has nothing to do with it. Ask Galileo. ;) Such a sudden rapid deceleration can be, should be, very unpleasant. I would not use the term safely at all. Especially since nothing in the spell description states, or even implies a safe deceleration. The feather faller descends at a rate...

D&D 5E Which parts of D&D came from Tolkien?

D&D would exist absent Tolkien's influences. There are many more influences than just the good professor. I do not get the idea that Dave Arneson, who started the fantasy RPG genre ( and took something from Gygax's and Perrin's Chainmail game) had a whole lot of interest in Tolkien. Someone...

D&D 5E Should D&D go away from ASIs?

The original game (the 3 LBBs) placed little value on Ability Scores, and a means to increase them really was not needed. AD&D certainly placed a much, much stronger emphasis on Ability Scores, but did not provide many ways to improve them. I always considered this a bug, not a feature. It...

D&D 5E Which parts of D&D came from Tolkien?

I thought it was Saul Zaentz that threatened to sue/sued TSR over the use of the terms Hobbit, Balrog, and a few others. He had the rights to much of Tolkien's Legendarium I thought that Gygax's use of named weapons, and magical weapons, was based on history-- Swords like Durandal and Joyeuse...

    D&D 5E 9 words to help run a sandbox

Ah the Quantum Tinker. I believe this is an entry under the "DM As Railroad Conductor" heading in the DMG. I could be mistaken. More interesting. Player's chose one road and will encounter a certain Q. Tinker. Player's chose another road and don't encounter it. Sometime later, at the Inn...

    D&D 5E Proposed Fix for Whack-a-Mole Healing

Several Ideas. 1-Perhaps a "recovery" process from unconscious (and prone) to stunned (and prone) when the PC goes above 0 hit points, then to "dazed" (and possibly confused ;) )-- meaning all actions at a disadvantage-- and finally, to normal? This seems a simple enough way to resolve things...

D&D 5E CHALLENGE: Change one thing about 5e

Issue: Characters are far too durable. I do not think a return to the flimsiness of the OD&D characters is needed, but I've found there is not that much fear of dying in 5e, unless the player is exceedingly, erm, *incautious*. That sense of trepidation, that at any moment...boom! That was part...

D&D 5E Volos Guide Seems Good But......

Well, half the time it was; "See monster, run the heck away from the monster. And maybe drop something that it might want to stop and pick up in order to slow it down." OD&D characters were very, very flimsy. Combat was very risky, and not all that rewarding. (monster xpts were meager...

D&D 5E Dealing with a Heavily Armored Paladin?

You seem to misunderstand the concept of 'cursed item' ;) I enjoy the irony of the armor-- the thing meant to save the character's life-- slowly killing the character. All the *discomforts* you mention fit right in with a cursed item. I think the exhaustion table would work well here. Every...

How Old is Your Oldest Die?

39 years old. I bought them in 1977, right after I bought the Holmes Blue box, because the dice included in it were, uhm, well, not very good. Here they are. Good ol' GameScience dice. :)

Want To See The Castle Ravenloft Poster Map In CURSE OF STRAHD?

Out of curiosity, Did Strahd cheerfully take the minimum of 10 hit points of damage from just touching the Holy Avenger. He had 55 hit points, IIRC, so just a scratch to him. Did the Paladin's player witness the item's saving throw? It would have had a +11 to its save (or maybe just a +6) v...

    D&D 5E 5e Skills whats your opinion

Too many cooks skills spoil the soup game. I like that 5e keeps them simple and broadly applicable. This way, characters aren't strangely limited in their actions because they don't have that very specific skill. The 5e skill system is a nice enough compromise of the C&C system-- use one of...

    The Origin of the Fireball

Interestingly enough, Gygax himself had this to say about the Fantasy supplement to chainmail: It is from a post he made on this forum, here http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?22566-Q-amp-A-with-Gary-Gygax&p=3612802&viewfull=1#post3612802 Had to have something to read during the...

D&D 5E The Official Poll! What THREE things do you like most about D&D 5th Edition?

I'm surprised that Advantage/Disadvantage is so very popular --i t is a good mechanic though-- and the magic system not so popular. This 5e wizard class is so much nicer to play than the old Vancian style Magic-User. IMHO. The notion of "Old School feel"? 5e seems like what 2e should have...

    THOUGHTS ON RUSTY DRAGON SET

They've had to push back other releases as well, like the Pathfinder Battles Iconic Heroes sets. in this set it is nice to see them including minis inspired by some of the NPC artwork like the Mage-Spy. Furnishings, Wagons, etc are nice, but I can use papercraft, or scratch-build, for those.

D&D 5E Creative ways to use spells

I've found that Mage Hand to be incredibly useful, more so than any of the other cantrips available to wizards. Drape a white sheet over it and walk along behind it making wailing sounds. Instant scary Ghost. Boo! Pour a vial of acid on something from a safe distance... lift open...
