D&D 5E Synergy with Command spell

I was looking at this more from the angle of True Strike. If they fail the Command saving throw, they don't get a save against the other "willing target" spells cast against them on their next turn. I haven't surveyed all the possible willing target spells. But there's gotta be a few doozies.

D&D 5E Synergy with Command spell

A lot of the suggestions for the Command spell are meant to stand alone. In other words, there is value to the caster inherent in the action, but largely as a delaying tactic. "Surrender" was one such option that intrigued me. If the target believed that the caster would take no prisoners, it...

LFP: 5e DnD Monday eves Pacific

I'm very close (1 or 3 weeks from now) to resuming my 5E game on alternate Monday nights, with 2-3 slots open. Very grim storyline with some high points. Significant player agency (death is voluntary). Magic items are 99% nonstandard. Playstyle ranges from by-the-book tactics to experimental...

D&D 5E Which Virtual Table Top are you using right now and what do you like best about it?

As a GM, when I shifted to online play, I started with Roll20. I still use it for multiple games (as a player). So many failures and crashes when we tried to use it for voice + play, so we gave up and shifted to Discord for voice and Roll20 for the visuals. Roll20 still feels klunky and...

D&D 5E Pact Boon: of the Glove. Does this work?

What happens when you facepalm while wearing the glove? Can you remove a glove and strike someone in the face to instigate a formal duel? Or even maybe cast Compelled Duel? Heck, even better, maybe your gloves are always ready, but not, Like Pact of the Blade. So you could send them away when...

    D&D 5E Level-agnostic adventures

Thanks for the clues. Found this link. https://dmdave.com/how-to-create-level-independent-challenges-a-la-challenge-of-champions-dmdave-workshop/ Not sure this is the direction I want to pursue. While I have gone this route before (player puzzles instead of character puzzles), I think i want...

    D&D 5E Level-agnostic adventures

I'm not excluding OSR adventures. I don't mean simple narratives where I have to fill in level appropriate challenges. I don't mean stat-free. I don't mean scalable adventures. I don't mean progression based adventure collections (campaigns). If you know of any adventures that can be...

    Poor DM/ Game Advice

This is where I have a lot of trouble pinning down a definition. From a player perspective, this may be a new campaign. But from the GM's perspective, it might be the same campaign with new characters. Consider publishing: paragraph, chapter, book, series, extended series. I have no idea what...

    Poor DM/ Game Advice

People with epilepsy. People who get T-boned by drunk drivers. People who get shot because they're in the wrong place at the wrong time. People who suck at building and maintaining social networks. People with areas with low (gaming) populations. People who don't have all their physical or...

    Poor DM/ Game Advice

I have a nebulous idea of what you're trying to say, because you've used the word you're trying to define as a part of it's definition. Or maybe this is just a way to justify proactively beating your DM to death for creating a horrible campaign in which multiple stories and players are...

    Poor DM/ Game Advice

I went back and read the OP. This was the main question. There's probably a LOT of reasons. I'll toss out a few in sketch-mode, some of which may have already been covered. Keep in mind I'm bouncing between GM and player mindsets. 1) There's a lot of shiny stuff out there. New adventures...

    Poor DM/ Game Advice

There is only a fine line if you have A plan for the players. There is no line at all if you have a vibrant world, with a story independent of the PCs. IOW, if you want the PCs to do something, you're going to have to do a bit of railroading. But if you only care about the consequences of their...

    Poor DM/ Game Advice

I'd like to point out that people may have different definitions of "campaign" even though their concepts for "adventure" or "scenario" may be similar. I don't think of a campaign as simply a series of strung-together adventures. For me, a campaign involves an established world, with it's own...

    D&D 5E Philosophy: Devil's Sight

Neat. There are several movie monsters that work the same way. OMG. That means even if a shadow exists as other creatures, with physicality, in three dimensions... it can never cast a shadow? 😱

    D&D 5E Philosophy: Devil's Sight

From the PHB! "Dim light, also called shadows, creates a lightly obscured area." I found this pretty curious. You could interpret it to sabotage my entire argument or to support it, depending on whether you consider "also called" to mean "alternative name" or "shortcut". Toe-may-toe...

    D&D 5E Philosophy: Devil's Sight

Applying logic, physics and other real-world concepts to a fantasy environment is completely natural. But you sorta have to choose and set your boundaries. At some point, it's "Shut up: MAGIC!" :) I personally could not reconcile a shadow being interpreted as a function of light within my...

    D&D 5E Philosophy: Devil's Sight

Didn't think this would go on for 5 pages, but it looks like my original question has led to a couple tangents. Welcome to the Internet! :) Anyway, I'm going to ignore all those and go back to my original ask of "How would you describe it to players?" And I'm going to share how I handled it...

    D&D 5E Philosophy: Devil's Sight

Hey don't shoot the OP. :) I only came up with this question after researching online and finding those definitions for DS and DV. The logic of 'dim light doesn't change under DS, only DV" is pulled from Crawford+ related sources. I'm just rolling with it.

    D&D 5E Philosophy: Devil's Sight

Yes/no is not what I'm going for.:) "Because magic/fantasy" is an adequate answer, though. Unless I missed some authoritative source, DS does not affect dim light. It only makes darkness appear as brightly lit. Dim stays dim. DV expressly makes dim appear as brightly lit.
