What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

Just picked up The Secret World RPG and intro adventure. I really loved that MMO and whether or not we play TSW straight up on tabletop, there’s some great ideas in that setting.

What's the term for these type of RPGs?

In a way, that's good as it allows lots of room for creative ideas and experimentation.

    The "G" in RPG

I missed a key word in my sentence: :ROFLMAO: Yeah, I tend to agree -- one reason we've settled on BRP is it's the easiest for us to translate between implementations (RQ, CoC, etc) and has the "right" amount of gameyness for us (roll under your skill for most things). It gets us that...

    The "G" in RPG

For me, I like the gamey aspects to disappear or at least be so unobtrusive that they are for all intents and purposes invisible during game play. I don’t mind the up front before game investment in game mechanics for character creation and establishing core rules (and even more complex...

D&D 5E So what's the scoop on D&D in PDF Format?

So just a small update on this -- Edge has a nice Split Screen function now, so just duplicate the pdf tab, split the screen, and select the 2nd instance, and you have a nice left and right view of the same document. Gotta say the Read Aloud function is pretty great as well -- you can select a...

What's the term for these type of RPGs?

I like this. Covers a lot of non-traditional type play and doesn't get into the weeds on mechanics or debates over subcategories. That's kind of how indie rock or alternative rock ended up being categories.

At My Most Burned-Out in 35 Years

Rather than just cancel everything outright, maybe do something with everyone but NOT do roleplaying for awhile. Maybe go for pizza and beer somewhere with everyone and talk about what's getting everyone excited in the genre these days, what's been disappointment, what SF genres you all like...

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

The latest edition of the game, RuneQuest Glorantha, officially introduced Passions as well as Rune Affinities, though they've existed in Pendragon and many different unofficial forums over the years (Griffin Mountain as you mentioned). Passion "skills" - Devotion (Deity), Fear (Type or...

    What is your wishlist?

I would love a post apoc game loosely based on Colony.

Edge Studios Announces Details for Arkham Horror RPG

I want Blessed and Cursed dice!

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

(re bolded sentence) As can anything! There are plenty of bad (traditional and stream of consciousness) novels out there, too. I would think good (and hopefully clear) system/tools lead to better results in either realm. As to agency, I think I understand where you were going with that -- as...

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

This post was illustrative to me. It seems some would find the concept of hidden fictional positioning anathema. It's a GM trump card (queue the GM Tyrancy) that cancels player agency. But I get your points below. I was trying to think of a model in fiction where what the player narratively...

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

For some players, they just want to get to the adventure and care less about their character motivation and will just hook on "getting rich" to put something quick and easy. Other players care more about their character background and greater goals in life. I mentioned previously our character...

The Answer is not (always) on your Character Sheet

When we switched to RQ from D&D, we knew we were getting into more complex rolling (SRs, Dodges, Parries, Hit Locations), but our table as a whole embraced it for what they felt better reflected combat. After some time, we got to the point where combats were resolved in about the same amount of...

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

Cautious play can also originate from the deadliness of the simulated system. RQ and CoC combats are notoriously deadly, and some systems (Harn) build in infections and diseases and all that terrible stuff. Now, players choose those systems because they want a more deadly "realistic" game, but...

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

It’d be really nice to not invoke Tyrant GM Universe in these discussions for a change.

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

Any reason but assume it’s in line with a thematic premise embedded in the character. Feel free to make something up for purposes of the example. Or any example that illustrates the differences in playstyle.

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

I think I may not have been clear. I don't mean trying to apply narrative to 5e (I know we've been discussing that). I mean illustrating a scene in DM-focused traditional play vs a player ideated play of narrative. Maybe do a short chat with the barkeep of a local tavern or something just to...

What makes an TTRPG a "Narrative Game" (Daggerheart Discussion)

Maybe do an example of each (traditional vs narrative table) using the same (short) scenario to illustrate?
