D&D 5E PotA: Crushing Wave Temple: lights or water spouts?

Earth and Fire temples have them with different colours. Air temple doesn't have them at all... Quite a nice idea to have them as water features. Adds to the flavour.

D&D 5E PotA: Crushing Wave Temple: lights or water spouts?

I've always assumed they were light sources.

How often do you use the Inspiration rules?

I read that post a couple of months ago, and we have tried to implement this idea at our gaming table. The players are happy with the idea, and I would say its been a relative success. They aren't going crazy with trying to shoehorn their character traits into every encounter, but they are...

    PotA - speed up needed

We had a discussion in the group. Turns out, they want to play through properly. So we elected to put it on hiatus and play something else for a while. So, we are going to start playing through the 5e conversion of Master of the Desert Nomads... Can't wait!

    PotA - speed up needed

Ahh, cool. I understand now. Yeah I like that idea - the fire temple is deserted if they go there. If they don't, it doesn't matter. re. lethal encounters - you are right. The fight that followed them triggered the Glyph of Warding in the Water Temple was epic. One of the best parts of the...

    PotA - speed up needed

That wouldn't really work, as they are only one level above the recommended. :)

    PotA - speed up needed

Yep, I see what you're saying. However, the campaign fatigue is hitting the DM (me) as well as the players - I wanna get playing, but I don't want to just drop the campaign. Overall we've all enjoyed it - using event based levelling has been great. I've levelled them after each outpost/temple...

    PotA - speed up needed

OK, thanks for the comments everyone. Perhaps it makes more sense to have Marlos in the Fane of the Eye so that the party face off against him - I think it will be fun for them to face a medusa! Then there can be a confrontation between Gar and Vanifer 'off screen', they hate each other as...

    PotA - speed up needed

There are 5 in the party. Elf Monk, Dwarf fighter, elf/half elf ranger (can't remember!), Gnome rogue/wizard and elf druid/barbarian. The druid/barbarian is looking sub optimal.. The fighter, monk and ranger dish out a ton of damage each round, only one at range though, which wouldn't be good...

    PotA - speed up needed

Hi all, Appreciate they most moved on from PotA a while back, but I've been running my group through it for what feels like ages. Campaign fatigue is beginning to set in with player and DM alike so I'm pondering ways to speed it up. Current situation is that the air and water temples are clear...

    Water Elemental Myrmidon (PotA)

In the actions for the Water Myrmidon (p213 of PotA) it lists the following: Multiattack - the myrmidon makes 3 trident attacks Trident - melee weapon etc etc Freezing Strike (Recharge 6). The myrmidon uses Multiattack. Each attack that hits deals an extra 5 cold damage, and the target's speed...

    D&D 5E Question on Ranger's and traps

I guess it depends what you want the end result to be. a) simply to get past the trap without being caught - stick will do the job b) pass by the trap without it being obvious that you've done so, or wish to rearm it - stick won't do the job It's all pretty contextual and situational, imo. Why...

    D&D 5E Question on Ranger's and traps

This is what I would have posted, if it hadn't been done already. :)

    Counter to Spike Growth?

So, we had a combat last night with a group of lizardmen. One went down quickly in a volley of arrows. The rest got caught in the Spike Growth. Following a tip from this thread, I had a couple use the body of their dead comrade as a launchpad to jump out. The other two were close to the edge so...

D&D 5E Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

They have cleared out the east side of the water temple, and the galley and market hall in the central section. Having interrogated a cultist they've learned much of the general layout of the temple and that Gar Shatterkeel has headed down to the Fane. I assumed they would head south to confront...

DM advice needed - my party one-round BBEG's

Have a Glyph of Warding that casts Spike Growth* if the party fail to make a secret hand signal, or say the passphrase. It's not much, but will burn up time and maybe a couple of spell slots to disarm, or dispel the spikes. *or your preferred AoE spell.

    Counter to Spike Growth?

I hear you, and in general that is what I try to do. However, I don't think it's unreasonable for the cults in PotA to become aware of the tactics of the party. Especially as they react in other ways - once the fist prophet is defeated, the rest move out of their own temples. They have to know...

    Counter to Spike Growth?

Also, while we're on the subject of Spike Growth, do you consider the piercing damage that the spikes do to be magical damage? Such that resistance on non-magical piercing damage has no effect? I'm guessing so, but there's a part of me thinking that as the spell description just says 'piercing...

    Counter to Spike Growth?

They will sometimes spend aaaages plotting their strategy for combat. I've started to give them three minutes to plan before stuff happens. (It's also a way to combat only getting through one encounter per session!) I can see an encounter with a dragon turtle being one of those. And I can...
